I bought a LG BH10 Blu Ray drive for my computer in late 2010.It came with Power DVD 8.Since getting it,I've had to do one provided patch from Cyberlink due to a security change on FOX titles like the Avatar 3 disk. That wored fine in fixing that and other FOX titles coming out at that time.As most know, the security on the Blu Rays changed yet again in the summer and most Blu Rays wouldn't play now from many studios.Fox again was the first I noticed this with on the X-Men First Class Blu Ray.Over time more Blu Rays from different studios would have this this problem(Lions Gate,Sony.Universal and the latest,Warner Bros. starting with The Harry Pottereathly Hallows Part 2 Blu Ray) Usually I would get this.
"You must update Cyberlink PowerDVD to continue playback of this content"
and after clicking "Yes" to that, it claims:
"Player Application update / Update complete."
and after clicking "OK" to that, nothing happens."
"Clicking the Play button at this point returns the "you must update Cyberlink ..." message and we have an endless loop."
or a red screen on X-Men First Class saying....
"Warning
Your Blu-Ray player requires an update in order to play this disk. The manufacturer of your Blu-Ray player recommends that you go to this website and follow the manufacturers instructions to update your blu-ray player.http://cyberlink.com/BDUpdate."
Cyberlink as we know was refusing to put out a patch for Power DVD''s pre Power DVD 10 to fix this.Again,I have Power DVD 8.
At the time,I wasn't prepared to upgrade to Power DVD 11 for three reasons.
1)My older Blu Rays(pre late 2011) still played on my BD drive.
2)I have a Sony Blu Ray Player for the T.V. and can watch the newer ones there.
3)I'm very bad with Tech.I have to bring a computer guy out for a lot of this stuff.Power DVD 11 needs a HD monitor and my monitor is older. My computer guy checked and said that my monitor is HD ready. He said it just needs a plug in which he provided and all I have to do is hit the button on the bottom of the monitor and it will switch from anolog to HD.He tested it and showed me the switch and pointed out that the picture quality improved. We swtiched it back to analog though since the Power DVD 8 wouldn't work on HD.
So I was leary of upgrading and was thinking of waiting until the spring when my computer guy came to try Power DVD 11.However something changed last week.
Slowly each studios new Blu Ray releases have stopped working on the drive due to needing the upgrade. The last studio that still worked was Paramount Blu Rays.Last week I bought Paranormal Activity 3 and tried it.It didn't work and like all the other new Blu Rays is demanding that upgrade. So I figured that's it,no new studios new releases will work now.
Later that night though,I ran into a BIG problem.I put in a older release that has always worked and now that dosen't work either. Now NONE of my Blu Rays work on the BD drive.I've been watching the Alien Anthology for weeks from before Christmas.I've watched all six disk on my BD drive with Power DVD 8.As of last Tuesday night,NONE of them work now and are demanding I update.
All my older Blu Rays are now getting that message like the newer ones.
I've wondered if a new code just went out in the last few days and that's why my older titles are suddenly no longer working? When I tried to play the new disk,"Paranormal Activity 3" did that imprint a code in the Power DVD 8 that now prevents ALL Blu Rays from not working unless updated to Power DVD 11,not just the newer releases?
And if I did upgrade to Power DVD 11,would that correct the problem with all my Blu Rays, not just the newer releases, but the old ones that suddenly stopped working Tuesday night?
I've been in contact with Cyberlink support team without much help talking about video cards and asking for this or that(in the fall I had to have my computer guy generate the DxDiag file for me and i don't know how to take screenshots either). And this stuff is so beyond me.I called out my tech guy to come next Tuesday to update my BD drive with Power DVD 11 and make sure it works hoping this will resolve my problem with the older Blu Rays and let me play the new ones.Cyberlink support in the end seems to think this will.
However, now I see Power DVD 12 just came out.And I'm not sure what to do.Should I upgrade to Power DVD 11 or Power DVD 12?And can I upgrade from Power DVD 8 to Power DVD 12 easily enough?Should this play the newer Blu Rays and resolve my new problem with my older Blu Rays?Am I setting myself up for new headaches if I upgrade to Power DVD 12 from Power DVD 8?
