Hi Jim & Loomis

Hope you managed to get to the bottom of this problem because I haven't! must have installed and followed all the procedures suggested to no avail.

I have cleaned the registry every time un-installed quicktime and re-installed cyberlink versions of it although other people do not seem to have a problem with quicktime.

I am sure we are not alone and some members are just following the thread and not posting.

reports and files sent to Support ticket number CS001111478

I hope you don't mind but but I also quoted your ticket numbers as well in the hope they can find some common link.

Cheers and thanks for posting

Take care

Geoff

Hi Geoff, Loomis,
Well, my PDR10 is still working, don't know for how long. However, my content packs 1 and 2 still will not install. Still waiting for an answer from tech support. It's been awhile. This means that I have PDR10 but a bare installation as far as I am concerned meaning that a lot of pips and particle things and such that were there in PDR9 are not there in 10. Fortunately, one can download an incredible amount of titles, dvd menus, pips, etc. However, all that is lost if you have to reinstall PDR10, as we have all found out.

I may just go back and reinstall PDR9 and be done with it. The only thing PDR10 brings is the ability for some 3D title stuff, and I can do that if I need to with Boris Grafitti which came with Corel Video Pro X4 Ultimate. The more I use Corel's product, the more I like it, not the least of which it always works.

I love PowerDirector but am losing faith in the stability of Cyberlink's software. Why not just admit it's buggy and take the time and really fix it. I'll bet we will see PDR11 before PDR10 is completely fixed.

Come on, Cyberlink, get with the program and test your software adequately. Like you, Geoff, there is no doubt in my mind that there are others out there having the same problem we don't hear about since they don't use the forum boards.

Take care all,

Jim

So glad to see other people having these issues (even if I am sorry it's not working for you!). I had the trial of 9, adored it, and when I went to purchase 10 was available so I opted to get that. Same issues here; tech support had me redownload/reinstall several times to no affect. Eventually went and found myself a copy of 9 on amazon, only to have it experience some of the same problems!

I swear it was the Content Packs that messed things up for me -- the intial install of 10 seemed to work fine except that I couldn't install the CPs, and when I contacted support about that and got a new download, that's when everything went wrong. I wish I could roll back my system to when I just had the working 9 trial but it was too long ago for a rollback to be feasible.

I have been trying other software but I don't like any of it half so well as PD. I keep trying PD again in the hopes that the issue will magically resolve itself as mysteriously as it began.

well Laura,
I guess I am a little luckier than others as at least I have the retail version of PDR 9 and if I uninstall PDR 10 and put on PDR9 it works great. Like you, I really like the program. But PDR 10 appears to be buggy. Let's see, so far that's you, me, Geoff, and Loomis. 4 people all with the same issues. How many more have it and either don't know about the forum or don't use it. It has to occur to Cyberlink that PDR 10 has REAL install issues.

There are numerous other programs available out there. There is also an open source editor out there. Cyberlink should be careful before they get a reputation for inadequately tested buggy software.

I wish you luck, Laura.

Take care,

Jim

Hello Dafydd,

So you want to know why I am still at the same position where I was last December 20th when this all happened. Frankly, it's probably a combination of 1) Buggy software and 2) tech support that is unable to figure out why we are all having these problems.
It's incredible. I was so impressed with PDR9 (which did and still does work flawlessly for me if I reinstall it) that I bought the upgrade to PDR10. Ever since then it's been.... uninstall....reinstall...send me screenshots... uninstall.... reinstall. Use the cleaner program. Dafydd, the last time I tried to uninstall PDR10, it wouldn't let me. THIS IS WEIRD.... After using the cleaner program as directed by tech support, PDR10, although not showing up in Windows control panel, was still on the computer. Surprised to see the desktop shortcut still there, I clicked on it (keep in mind this was after uninstalling PDR10) PDR10 loaded.. That's right. A deleted program still ran.
So, now the problem is that even though PDR10 is now on my computer, it won't let me install the Content Packs. Ahhhhhh.... keep getting a error applying transforms..... more screenshots. Ahhhh...

It's almost a joke now. In response to one of my many tickets, I was asked to send the build version and serial number of PDR9. I did so. In response to another ticket on the same subject, I was requested BY THE SAME TECH to send a screen shot of the serial number and build version. It seems right and left hand doesn't know what is going on. It is making me wonder if there are actual software people there at tech support, or if it is like so many tech support centers where someone just reads down a flowchart and really doesn't know what they are doing.

I'm surprised nobody has started blogging about this version of the software.

Sorry to ramble,

Take care all,

Jim

Hi Jim,
Thank you for the update.
I have been closely following this thread and I have been thinking of the problem you have.I asked CyberLink about the Contents and the cleaner tool (I asked for a Contents cleaner tool, I just requested one... just a maybe.) problem you mentioned earlier.

The CLCleaner tool just "fools" your PC into allowing you to re-install and does not remove the program.

With all this uninstalling you've had to do, I wonder if at some point a connection to MSI has been removed and is the route cause of the problem.

In past times I would be suggesting a complete wipe of your hard drive and an install of the OS again. If I was having the problems you're getting I think that's what I would do.

Just my opinion and I don't have any suggestions/help/ideas on how to resolve your situation.

Dafydd

Uninstall, reinstall, upgrade Quicktime, run a registry cleaner, reinstall, uninstall, ad infinitum! I will try again today to get PD 10 installed and if I can't I will be purchasing video editing software from another company. I have wasted 12 hours on what should be a simple install. It is not my computer or Quicktime or the drivers it is PD software that is the issue. Acknowledge that and fix the issue.

I'm a member of the sad PDR10.exe has stopped working club. I used the program for a few small projects - but out of the blue, it just started acting up on me - and now I'm getting all kinds of glitchy errors - mostly that the program stops working and then just disappears (without saving). I have a ticket open and will be working through support to see if they can get to the root cause. Ughh...
[Post New]
hi Dafydd,

Thanks for taking the time to looking into the problem again.

You said....In past times I would be suggesting a complete wipe of your hard drive and an install of the OS again. If I was having the problems you're getting I think that's what I would do.

I would never do this. Why? Because PowerDirector is the ONLY program I am having trouble with. Wiping the drive and reinstalling everything is tedious and laborious with no guarantees. If I were having all kinds of problems with multiple programs or the operating system I would do just what you suggest.

I, along with at least 4 others... I see there is a new person now complaining on the forum, am thoroughly convinced that the problem is not with our systems but that of PowerDirector 10. It just doesn't play well with others. PDR10 installation and performance regarding losing its way (PDR10 has stopped working) is causing people to look towards other programs, a darn shame because PDR9 works great. The least Cyberlink should do is refund the money for the PDR10 upgrade to those of us who have spent countless hours trying to get this program to function properly.

Over the years, I've worked in computer assembly, repair, quality assurance and have programmed in Fortran (years ago!), Cobol, Pascal, Basic, Visual Basic, and C and C++, even in Octal on the old Data General Eclipse and machine language on the old Commodores so, while not an expert, I am not exactly a newbie around computers. While I can't speak for Cyberlink, today, so many tech support people don't have the knowledge they need to solve real problems. I am sure you've encountered some of those. You know, you can just tell they are reading down a flowchart of questions.

You know, I wonder if the problem is the 64 bit implementation. I wonder if the same problem occurs when it is installed in 32bit operating systems. I doubt it though, based on the type of error.

In any event, I am not willing to wipe my hard drive when I believe that the problem is the software and not the computer. It's not worth it for one program that may OR MAY NOT work correctly when reinstalled.

Again, thanks Dafydd, for tying to help and all the time on the forum you spend attempting to help not just us with this problem but all others you attempt. I'm sure people don't realize the time it takes you to monitor the forum.

Take care,

Jim

Hi there Jim, Geoff, Loomis, Laura et al -

In using PD since PD7, I've had to uninstall & re-install PowerDirector many times... while other software has just trundled away without any dramas. It is true that there have been many installation issues reported through the forum, but I've fortunately never experienced them.

Often, the CLCleaner tool is suggested as a way of facilitating the new installation. As Dafydd says, it "fools" your PC without actually uninstalling anything.

I always use (whether it's recommended or not) an uninstaller tool called Revo Uninstaller (the free version) to make the process clean. It actually uninstalls the software (through Windows) & removes registry entries. Using it has always (for me) resulted in a successful clean install of the software. Maybe this is what's required in your case(s).

The steps I take:
1. Open RevoUninstaller
2. Select the software I want & click "Uninstall" (* for PD10, you'd need to separastely do this for PowerDirector, WaveEditor, SmartSound, Content Pack I & II)
3. Select (at least) the moderate level for registry cleaning
4. After all that's done, reboot the PC.
--------------------------------------------------
5. Reinstall ALL the software listed above *
6. Open PD & apply your activation code
7. Install any update patches.

I understand you've been through a frustrating process & you might not enjoy seeing yet another uninstall in front of you. I'm just letting you know what invariably works for me.

Cheers - Tony

Hi Tony,

You know, I will give it a try. The only part I can't do is uninstall Content Packs I and II since it would not let me install them in the first place, even though with the first initial install of PDR10 upgrade they DID install. Hey, got nothing to lose and I guess I can stand one more uninstall.

I have heard of RevoUninstaller and may have use it on another machine in the past.

Since my version of PDR10 Ultimate 64 is an upgrade version, I assume I have to reinstall PDR9 before trying the reinstal lof PDR 10 and the content pasks.

Thanks for taking the time to chime in here, maybe it will do the trick.

Take care,

Jim

Jim -

1. In Control Panel > Programs & Features, is there a listing for CyberLink PowerDirector ContentPack I & II?
2. Are they present in C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\templates\PowerDirector Content Pack 10?

You're right about the upgrade version... after your complete uninstall, you'd need to reinstall PD9, activate it, then install the PD10 upgrade. No doubt, you have all your installer files saved to a safe location.

I hope it works for you Jim, & I'm fairly confident.

Cheers - Tony

Well, here is what happened:
I couldn't uninstall the content packs because they did not show up. So.....
1) Removed PDR 10 using RevoUninstaller
2) Installed PDR9 (from retail disk) and PDR9 Content Pack
3) Installed PDR9 upgrade to latest build (3305)
4) reinstalled PDR10 upgrade, the 1129b which is the upgrade file I downloaded from Cyberlink

So far, it was O.K. installed fine.
5) Attempted to install Content Pack I for PDR10 and received error message (attached) and didn't let me install. It was looking for the path of c:\users\Jimbo\AppData\Local\Temp\RarSFX10\1033.mst. Sure enough, in the Temp folder in that path, RarSFX folders up to RarSFX9. Hmmmm the numbers stopped one short of the necessary folder.

I decided to look using regedit to see if there were any references to the Content Pack I and even though the Content Packs were missing from the control panel and RevoUninstall didn't see it, there were several references to a Content Pack I for PDR10 in the registry. Go figure. And the reference to Content Pack I had a different filename than the one I downloaded from Cyberlink.

So, I am going to try one more thing and see if it helps. With the way things are going, I doubt it will but you never know. With all the installing and uninstalling Cyberlink had me do, who knows what got screwed up.

Take care, Tony

Hi Tony,
Did remove the references from the registry to Content Pack I for PDR10 and didn't make any difference, the Content Pack I did not install, same error.

I could be wrong (most probably) but I thought that PDR10 upgrade was looking for that same folder, the temp one, and didn't get any errors when installing. Oh well, thanks for all your time.

Take care, all....

Just a ballpark question Jim, did you delete the temp files? Maybe it won't overwrite them..

Just my opinion, and from what I can see you have been very patient....

I think you should get a FULL version download link of PowerDirector 10 offered to you by Cyberlink for all of your trouble at no charge. Maybe that would get you on to video editing which is what you want to do in the first place. I would ask Technical support to see if they could provide you with a Full Download link.

Maybe there is some problem from trying to upgrade that has now caused a problem on your system. It is entirely possible that the Full version won't help you either. One of lifes mysteries. But what the heck....you paid Cyberlink for the upgrade. Maybe someone can help you get that link to the Full version to get you out of this mess. If it doesn't work...well at least it was a try. I am not an expert, just an observer.

I hope it works out for you, it really is great software. Just my humble opinion. But I bet if the full download version worked out for you, you would tell other people that Cyberlink did the right thing to help one of its customers(you!). And you would tell five people and they would each tell five people and so on and so on.

Best,

Kevin

Okay, here is the latest update Tony, Kevin, Dafydd, Loomis, Geoff, John, Laura and anyone I forgot...

Received an email from Tech Support directing me to download 2 programs... A cleaner program for Content Pack I and a cleaner program for Content Pack II. Run them in order (I then II) reboot, resinstall the content packs.

The cleaner programs must have done their job in successfully fooling the software because each content pack installed completely.

So now, I have a fully functional (to the best of my knowledge, who knows what lurks ahead) version of PDR10 and its content packs. I say who knows, because originally, everything installed okay when I first got the upgrade software. Then, it stopped working. Then reinstalled. Then worked. Then stopped working, then wouldn't even load.

So you can see that while I am happy that everything seems to be back at what it should be, only time will tell if the program will continue to load and function. So I'll keep an eye on it for the next couple of weeks and ... we'll see.

I am still convinced something is not right with the software. Since it was an upgrade from PDR9, is it only the upgrade file? I don't think so after reading the other posts. IS it a problem with the installation program? Is its code being overwritten by some other code? Why doesn't the uninstaller for the program FULLY uninstall it rather than having to rely on "cleaner" programs to get the job done (3...on each for program and content packs)?

Since we are aware of others having the same problems, Cyberlink techs really need to analyze what about PDR10 isn't right. Install issues will kill the use of their software by others who undergo the frustration we all have and don't have our patience. There ARE other programs out there.

And Kevin, you are so right. Word of mouth is the best ...or worse...source of advertising. Could I in good conscience recommend the software to others? That will take some thought and only because when it works, I believe it is probably the best consumer video editing program out there. But is it worth the hassle? Consider this: When the problem originally came up, at one time, after waiting 2 weeks to hear from tech support, I had to write to THEM to find out what was going on. That's just ridiculous.

In any event, a real THANK YOU to all on the forum who has followed this and have tried to help. To my other friends I wish them success in getting their PDR10 to work.

Now to see how long it works.....

Take care,

Jim

As I stated I would do yesterday I have moved onto another program. Thanks to everyone who offered their assistance with my install issues. I have a deadline looming and cannot wait for tech support to get back to me, the trouble is I have to learn a new software while this deadline looms. I was a software trainer for many years and literally have done thousands of installs, never have I had such a difficult time simply installing software. Good Luck!

Jim -

It looks like Dafydd's request paid off http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/15/21180.page#115149

You're right. The necessity for special/separate cleaner tools does beg the question you've put.

You've done well to persist & work your way through the problem with tech support. Lots of folks would have given up on the software, evidenced above.

Had same problem as you with content pack one would not install as PD keep insisting it was already install , and I had removed it with normal windows installer after a install failure.

But when I ran Revo Uninstaller it found files from this content pack that I now removed with Revo Uninstaller and then content packs installed just fine.

Look very carefully with Revo Uninstaller running and see if you can find PD 10 content files if you do you got it made.
