Buttons per page - DVD Menu

Can someone tell me what controls the number of buttons per page when creating a DVD menu? When I look at my Menu Structure, I see a node for every chapter. If I wanted say 5 or 6 thumnails on a menu page, how can I change that? The "Buttons per page:" drop down only allows for one button per page and I can't edit that number.

There is a set of instructions on Menu Designer.

It was written for PD 7, not much has changed.

A tutorial:
Menu Designer PD7 still applies.

PD10's menu system is a huge disappointment, and that includes the issue of the number of buttons. Here's my experience with this one issue.

The PD10 Help file claims that up to 14 menu buttons can be placed on a menu page. Elsewhere I saw that 6 menu buttons could be on a page, and that seemed reasonable for my purposes. So I created a custom menu with 6 buttons per page. All seemed well until I clicked the Burn button to burn my movie to a folder. Then I got an error message saying some of the buttons were overlapping. PD10 cannot tell you which buttons are overlapping, so you have to go back to the menu designer and play with the buttons and just keep trying until the error message on Burn no longer appears. I do not understand why Menu Designer cannot make this determination during the design process.

After getting rid of overlap by much trial and error and reducing button sizes and moving buttons around, I tried again to Burn to a folder. This time I got an error message saying that only 4 buttons are allowed on each menu page. So I had to delete two buttons from the page and rearrange the remaining 4 buttons again.

I eventually got a custom menu that was accepted by PD10 when I clicked the Burn button. I did burn to a folder and then used ImgBurn to write an AVCHD disc for my 18 minute video.

But PD10 cries out for a decent menu designer. I bought the product to make discs, and the existing Menu Designer is a serious impediment because of this and many other problems that you can find discussed in the forums for PD10 and earlier versions.

I was finally able to see five buttons on my menu page. BUT, it was not because of something that I knew I was doing in the prescribed manner. I had used the button creation icon to place more buttons, but I am confused as to why when I first started creating my menu, my tree had a node for each chapter. It seems to me that the pull-down at the bottom left of the disk create application should allow one to select the number of buttons desired. I noticed that the numeral "1" was the only choice at that point, but I typed the numeral "5" after selecting the pull-down.

Getting a little frustrated, I saved the project and magically when I re-opened the file, my tree showed five chapters per node, completely unlike the way it looked when I saved and closed the file.

I am having some real slow-down issues (and have had all along with PD10 since I loaded it). Even though my system is equipped with 16gb of ram and my new video card has 1gb of memory, the application stutters and starts. I'll choose a function and then wait. I am thinking it MUST be my computer. I am running Comcast's constant guard with Norton security suite, so maybe that's part of the hiccups... I don't know. The system does get regularly scanned. I've noticed lately that other applications are jerky as well.

Creating scrolling texts, for ending credits for example, seems particularly problematic. It takes a considerable amount of time to process edits and the application also takes a considerable amount of time to open or run one of these scrolling texts.

Aren't computers fun? I'm stopping short of throwing the thing through the second story window. ;

If you will post your computer spec, we might have a better idea of how to advice you on getting the most out of PD10.
There are several setting in PD that can affect you editing experience.

Part A and Part B

Use Post Reply, not Quick Reply. No attachment on Quick Reply.
Please attach the Dxdiag.txt files to the post, do not copy and paste. It is also not necessary to zip them.

One thing that greatly affects the edit lag, is the resolution of the preview. You can adjust the preview resolution by clicking the box under the time display.

The higher resolution the longer the lags are, too low make a poor looking preview, but makes the lag much shorter.

OK, here's my info:
PowerDirector 10, Version 10.0.0.1129a

I've dumped a couple of programs recently loaded that may have been causing a problem or two, but I need to check that playback display resolution as you suggested.

Looking at your Dxdiag.txt file I do not see anything in the 32 Bit version of the Dxdiag that would cause you any problem.

Of course I could have overlooked something, because I just checked the high points.

You have plenty of RAM, HD space on C: and your video card is good.

I would lower the preview resolution and see how it goes.

I use the 'High" setting on my computer. I have some lag at higher resolutions so High works good.

Hi Allmoto

Please can you provide screenshots of the Create Disc Workspace?
Carl is answering you here and I'm only asking for the screenshots to make the task of "seeing and understanding" easier. The aim is to see what you're doing/trying to do. A screenshot of the edit Workspace timeline and the Chapters would also be very helpful.

Had the same hurdle until realising that overlapping refers to the button's working border which pops up when moving buttons around. It's simply a matter of positioning these work boxs so they don't make contact.

But boy, adjusting the number of buttons per page sure is a dark art. I eventually got it to work but I'm unsure how. It may require the number of chapters first being loaded into the 'create disc/content' panel. Then saving. You might get lucky.

Hi Ade57,
Yes when you first design a menu or modify one there is only one chapter button, but when you have content (titles) added then the appropriate # of buttons should apply, and if you modify the chapters/titles you can add more buttons up to the limit.
My only regret is that all buttons are the same design....I would like to see the ability to add my won design for each separate chapter.
