When I apply a particle to a clip (in OVERWRITE mode) the clip does not show through. The particle effect blocks out the scene entirely (the audio continues). Isn't the clip supposed to be seen behind the particle effect?

Some particles are not transparent. Also, make sure the particle you are using is in a track below your main clip.

You choose a particle effect that has a transparent background, put the particle effect on a Video track below the video track.

If you choose a particle effect that does not have a transparent background, you can modify the particle by removing the background.
