Play Selection

New user to PowerDirector from VideoStudio.

When I select a portion of a video in the timeline, I want to just play that selection. With the scrubber positioned at the start of the selected area, it starts playing at that point. However, when it reaches the end of the selection it continus playing and starts moving the end selection marking to match the played selection until you click pause.

How can I play just the selection and have it stop playing at the end of the selection? In the process of installing on Win 8.1 ....

Hi D.Vertz -

If you just want to play a single video clip, you can either:
1. Place the scrubber at the start of the clip, then click it to select it - then press Play or the Space bar.
2. Clicking on "Clip" under the preview window will get you the same result.

When you're in Movie Mode, the timeline will just play forward from the scrubber position.

Cheers - Tony

Sorry Tony, I think I have not made myself clear.

I understand Playing any part from any point (clip or movie) by placing the scrubber at the point where you want to start and clicking play.

I have doscovered that if I split a movie (I guess this is the process of making the "clip"), I can select that portion and play just that portion and it will stop at the end where the next split occurs.

But what I want to do is Not split the movie (yet) and play just the selection made with yellow handles to the left and right of the scrubber (the selection) which allows for "cut" "copy" and "remove" that portion. In the process of installing on Win 8.1 ....

I have used VideoStudio and it does work the way you describe. PD10 does not. But it's easy to get used to. And PD10 is soooo much faster. Win 10, i7

Thank goodness for HDedit's experience with Video Studio!

I see what you mean now. No - the range selection tool (yellow handles) is for cutting, copying & render preview.

You might try (temporarily) making a split at the "end point", just for the purpose of reviewing that section... then undoing the split (Ctrl + Z).

Cheers - Tony

Hi D.Vertz,
Have you used the single frame movement option provided in PD?

When I want to check I have the right position I observe the Clip and Movie counter timecode/frame position in Preview. I then use the keyboard control of the "," and "." for frame back and frame forward, to get to the correct Split point I want. Holding either of these keys down will allow a scene to play through.

The Preview player has the same single frame movement (back/forward) operated by mouse control. The keyboard shortcut is much easier to use and allows me to Split a clip just where I want.

Use undo for any mistakes made.

You also can type into the Preview counter the Timecode position for the track scrubber/slider. Useful for both Clip and Movie modes. I use that a lot as well.

Have fun.

Dafydd

HDedit,
I suspected as much, but thank you for the conformation.

Tony,
That does seem to be one way to accomplish the stop. However, an adjustment needed for the that paticular section would not permit an undo without losing the edit. I supose PD also does not have a Heal for a split that is not applied by an Undo? It would have also been nice to Heal a removed section during this edit. As it was, I could not find one and ended up have to completely remove the track (with all its splits) and re-insert the entire movie, then start my splits all over again. Thank you for your suggestion.

Dafydd,
Yes. I did use "," & "." during the first part of the editing. It was a nice shortcut.
Yes. Undo was used alot.
Yes. Typed position was used several times.
Thank you for your suggestions, however none of these would help in what was needed. I was making a music video. Many cuts between two video tracks. The audio disabled in those live performance video tracks. The audio was processed in the studio. I needed to hear the audio track and watch the instruments to sync the two together. Frame by Frame viewing would not work for this.

As this was our first video produced, it was a learning curve on new software. I am new to this software because VedioStudio failed to install and the Corel Support would not respond in a timely manner (over a week).

Thanks again to all. This video is complete. We may tweak it a little with transitions though. In the process of installing on Win 8.1 ....

Quote: I supose PD also does not have a Heal for a split that is not applied by an Undo?

Hi D. Vertz,

There was. Creating a temporary Split is a great workaround. Or at least it was in PD9. As there was indeed a way to “heal” as you put it, a temporary Split, by using the Combine function in the right click menu. This would remove the temporary Split, thus restoring the clip to it’s original state (if left unaltered), without the necessity of using Undo (which as you say, also undos the edit)
However, for some unknown reason, Cyberlink has omitted the Combine option in PD10.
This omission has been reported here in the forum, and I guess we can only wait and see if Cyberlink restores the Combine tool via a future update patch.

And in case you’re unaware, there is also the Seek By tool. I haven’t used it very much, and not sure if it's capabilities directly apply to your original question. But you might find that you can adapt it's functions, to suit your preferred editing and workflow needs.

It sounds like you want "looping." I can see where that would be handy. Jerry Schwartz
