what processor temp are safe during video rendering?
[Post New]
I have a prebuilt dell xps435mt/9000 with i7 920 9gb ram and gtx260 video card with 2gb ram and stock
i7 processor fan.

I was playing around with PD 10 doing some video rendering with 1080p 60fps files from a panasonic tm900k. I was watching the core temps using piriform speccy program and was surprised to see all 4 cores pretty muched maxed out
and running temps around 72-74C. Under no load the temps are running around 38-40C.

Searching I found that it is difficult to upgrade to a better cpu fan on this system. The bios will give an error message on
startup and you have to modify the MB.

So is 72-74 safe for video processing that may take hours?

That's 161F. I hope it's OK, I normally hit 195F+ on my laptop!

I would say those temperatures are too high.

Spec seems to say max case temp is 67.5 C.

I would check that the heat sink is seated well and the fins are clean of dust. Be sure the fan is running.

Edit: fixed spelling.

All the i7's will run up too and including 100c However from about 85+ they can get a bit flacky!

Your temps are fine, you have a small case with poor through flow ventilation, I don't know if you can take the side of the case off but that would aid in cooling.

Also when quoting temps always be mindful of the ambient (room) temp, you will never cool a CPU below ambient temp unless employing something like refrigeration

I think you are fine, The 920 runs Hot with a TJMax of 95 or 100c so you have a way to go based on the Intel Spec. That said I found I got stability issues on my 920 till I changed the for a better cooler. You will know if you have issues if your PC reboot, crashes etc while rendering. I wouldn't worry about it.

If you exceed the temperature limits on your CPU, the system will take care of itself. Some will run slower, some will shut down, etc., but in general any reasonably new (last few years) system will not allow itself to burn up.

I'm not sure about the GPUs on the video cards, but I would imagine they have the same kinds of safeguards. Jerry Schwartz
