Audio Track Goes Out of Sync

Hello

I'm tearing my hair out over this.
BACKGROUND
I've been working on my first PD project having changed from Adobe Premiere because it was too slow. I've imported my holiday video - about 300 clips - and have been editing it, adding transitions, text and a soundtrack.
I had a problem a few days ago when trying to modify a soundtrack clip in WaveEditor - which promptly crashed. I decided to avoid WE but an hour later I noticed that the audio and video clips from a certain point in the timeline had gone out of sync - by exactly 2 seconds. I tried unlinking the A/V of one clip and moving the audio back into line with the video. This worked, but I wasn't about to do the same for the other 299 clips, so I tried using Undo instead. After about 30 undo's (most of which took over 50 seconds to process) the timeline suddenly went back into sync. Whew! I took a backup and carried on, saving my project manually every 5 mins or so (I also have autosave enabled).
CURRENT PROBLEM
Last night when I finished editing everything was looking good. Ready to add some more soundtrack clips and finish the editing this weekend.
Fast forward to this evening. I came home from work, fired up the PC and started PD. As soon as the project loaded I couldn't believe my eyes - the timeline was totally messed up again. About 3 minutes into the timeline I find clip whose audio is now 4 seconds ahead of its video. I then have a few images, but now two of them seem to have doubled up (two copies of the same image overlapping each other). Then comes an 'orphan' audio clip - its video has disappeared from the timeline. Following this, subsequent clips have their audio 5 seconds behind the video, but - get this - when I select a clip, its audio is now linked with the following video clip, and this staggered formation continues for the next 6 minutes (about 25 clips). We then have 2 color boards (no sound obviously) then subsequent clips have audio ahead of video again by 4 seconds.
I don't want to ramble on too long, but hopefully you get the idea. And having just loaded the project I don't have the Undo option available this time.
If this is a bug, I would be quite prepared to work around it if I could select all my clips, unlink the A/V then move the audio to a separate track and keep it in sync manually - if anyone knows how I can select and unlink a range of clips I would appreciate hearing from you, or any other suggestions welcome.

Peter;

Welcome to the forum...and THANK YOU for the DXDIAG!!

I have never heard of PD Ultra 10.0.0.0925

Please open the program, click on the word POWERDIRECTOR in the upper right and tell me the version (Mine is Ultra64 10.0.0.1012).

Hi Fred,
It was the version I used a lot remember

Anyway, it's the boxed version.

Hi Peter905,

1. Please apply the latest patch update: http://www.cyberlink.com/downloads/support/powerdirector/patches_en_US.html 1012.

2. The issue you have appears to be a corrupted saved pds file. Please save regularly and use the following method
File > Save Project as > (broswe for a location, folder on a desktop will do) save pds file in numerical order.
Example 001.pds, 002.pds etc. To a NEW pds each time.

3. Please Open PD10 > Preferences > File and alter the Export location to a new folder (put it on your desktop is a lot better than the default location) - Create a new folder on your desktop.

The Auto saved files are a backup.
Do not use the Save function for large complicated projects - you are asking for trouble.

AutoSave may help you IF you're lucky.
Hidden Folders are present in the following address location:
C:\Users\PCNAME\AppData\Roaming\CyberLink\PowerDirector\10.0\AutoSave
Scroll through and you may find the last or last but one is the pds you need to rectify your situation.

I hope some of that helps.

Dafydd

Hi Peter,
I'd like you to retest after updating to 1012 build.

Please read this thread: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/20043.page#106109
This issue has been reported to CyberLink and may be similar to yours. My ref: 292

Hi Fred

I can confirm the build no. was correct...10.0.0.0925. I bought it from Amazon - boxed version as Dafydd says.

Hi Dafydd

Thanks for the comprehensive reply.

Autosave DID help, I found numerous saves and loaded one from just before the sync went crazy. There was just one clip whose video had disappeared and its audio had linked itself to the previous clip. I unlinked it, removed it fromt the timeline and re-inserted it. Everything appeared to be OK so I saved the project (Save As) beginning a new sequence as you suggested.

I created a new folder for Autosaves and altered the Preferences to point to it as you advised. I also copied a few of the 'good' Autosaves into my new folder as longstops in case I ever need to go back that far.

I applied the patch and now the version shows as build 10.0.0.1012.

I will re-test and post any further problems here. I read the thread you linked (your ref 292); the main difference seems to be that Chuck's sync error seems to have been cumulative whereas mine showed a constant 2-second shift over a large part of the timeline.

Really grateful for your help - thanks.

Peter.

I have been struggling with the same "audio goes out of synch" problem. While I have been getting advice though a support ticket advisor, the advisor has focussed on my computer and PD10 installation, which is not getting anywhere.

I have used various versions of PD starting with PD5.0 in 2005 and upgrades including PD9 Ultra64, and never have I had the problems experienced with my October 2011 upgrade to PD10 Ultra64. I am not a power user, but I am a long-time user! What follows is a bit of current communication to my Support Provider:

I have experimented with nearly identical projects to see what kind of actions initiate specific problems through "undocumented features":

1) The first is to avoid using “overwrite” on any track, especially with unequal media (i.e. don't "overwrite video with still image). During tests and project re-construction, I have created displacements of audio vs . video, and the displacement was propagated through every video clip down the timeline. As long as I noticed the fault and only used “undo”, my project could get back to synchronization. When I have not been aware that the fault was in place, I used “remove” and other tools to “unlink”, move and “re-link”, as it appeared by the timeline view that the fault was corrected. Not so! PD10 gets progressively confused on its timeline, and in the worst case, crashed PD10 so that any time I tried to restart the file, as soon as it got to placement on the timeline, a window said "PDR10.exe has stopped working". To avoid problems, I now use only secondary tracks to create the effect of overwriting. In view of the reality that “remove” used on an”overwritten” clip does not restore the part overwritten, either the application logic or the instructions should highlight the probable faults that are created. Ideally, an application should disallow any action from which it cannot recover.
2) When editing “Title” on the Title Timeline, change “duration” only by extending (dragging) on the specific clip. I found that if I change “duration” any single clip through the toolbar, every title clip on that timeline gets displaced, even though each is clearly and substantially separated in time.
3) I have problems with Media Viewer not going full screen from the timeline, created by "Troubleshooting with Support"
4) I am now missing a bunch of Title and PiP items that I was using just last week!

I am about ready to uninstall and reinstall every PD10 component for perhaps the 8th or 9th time this last two weeks. I started with only one problem, and now I have several! I have three PD10 saved sources: my first, which was a functioning download, my second, which was a special direct download from theCyberlink Support site, and the third is my purchased backup CD. My application includes the most recent patch 1012, which had no effect on my issues.

It's a good thing I am retired!!!!
