Need some help - lag problems while previewing and now powerdirector won't even install

I've had powerdirector since may this year and when I first started using it I didnt have any problems with it - I made an 11 minute video with no troubles. I went overseas for 3 months and took a lot of video footage and when I got home I went to work on a video. I made the first clip which was about 5 minutes long, and I'll admit it had a lot more transitions in it than the 11 minute video but it seemed to work fine when I was editing it. After I had finished and went back and opened the file a certain amount of time later, maybe a week or so, when I watch the preview it starts out ok but then just lags and jutters really badly when it hits transitions or sped up/slowed down footage. The mp3 that I have running along side plays properly but goes at the right speed while the footage lags and then the footage skips and catches up, then starts juttering again. I read on another post that sometimes uninstalling and reinstalling powerdirector helps, so I did that and it didn't make any difference, then I read that updating video drivers can help, so I did that and as soon as it installed powerdirector wouldnt open - the error message said it had stopped working. Now I tried to uninstall it and reinstall it and it gets to a certain point in the install process and a runtime error occurs and it fails. I am so frustrated, we have just had our computer fixed and it cost $150 because we had a virus on it. Powerdirector worked fine after this (apart from the lag issues) so I don't think it's related. The computer is 3 years old so I am not sure if it is really powerful enough to handle the program, the specs are: Dell Inspiron 530s - Processor is an intel core 2 duo cpu, E6750 @ 2.66 ghz and we have 4 gb of ram and it is 32 bit os.

Any advice would be much appreciated as I would love to get going and finish the video so I can show my family and the people I travelled with. Cheers

I forgot to add that I am editing 1080 50p footage if that helps, can no one give me any advice?

The lag in the preview is a common issue - video manipulation is a very resource intensive operation, and doing it real-time in the preview window is a lot to ask of your system. Lowering the quality of the preview may help, but with your system it will probably never be smooth. You may have to produce the video in order to see the effects properly renderend.

As for the reinstall problem, have you tried running the cleaner before reinstalling? You can find a post about it here:

I am running a similar configuration to yours (same machine, but with a 2.8 GHz processor and Win 7 64-bit). PD9 works almost flawlessly for me, although I usually don't do HD video, so I don't push it nearly as hard as you are trying to. You didn't mention if you are using the onboard video or an add-in.

If you post a DXDiag file, it might help to determine if anything in your configuration is the cause of your problems. Folks here are pretty helpful at solving these problems, but they need that information to really evaluate what's going on.

I've noticed that several people have downloaded my dxdiag but noone has responded with any advice. Could anyone give me any information regarding the capabilities of my pc and whether or not I should persevere with it or look into buying a new computer. I understand now that the lag is due to pc capabilities - i can put up with producing the video to see the timing. I am currently using the cleanup tools to reinstall the program - i'll let you know how it goes

Vista is not the best system.
Your video card is under-powered.
Your processor could be improved upon.
Hi-def, even 720, will make your computer struggle mightily.
You may need to enable shadow(proxy) files within PD.
1. Defrag, delete temp files.
2. Get a much better video card.
3. W7 64-bit will allow for more RAM usage.
4. 7,200 rpm drives, not SSD's.

I am pleased to say that I used the clean up kit and power director is now installed and working swimmingly - thankyou for your help, I am grateful there is such a great support base for this program, I am glad I chose to purchase it

P.S. I enabled shadow files and realised the reason it wasn't working previously was due to the fact I relocated all the video files and didn't know that the shadow files had to regenerate, once they had all loaded the preview works really well.
