OK. So, is PD10 a step forward in HD video editing ?

Many are probably wondering if it's worth the upgrade. The good news is that PD10 is noticeably more stable than PD9. It's actually hard to crash it.

As for video quality and rendering speed improvements ? Well, doing extensive testing with still images mixed with AVCHD clips from Canon, Panasonic and Sony cameras/camcorders and adding various effects, fixes, cropping, and trimming to the lot results in stable editing with predictable results ! A nice change.

Is it faster ? Yes and no. If you're looking for quick video production then yes, it's faster. If video quality is your goal then leave all the accelerators out (this only works with fast multi-core PC) - the raw power of a multi-core PC still renders a more consistent, higher quality image (AVCHD in my case). And in my case it's actually a bit faster then using the GPU capability.

And new in PD10 is the ability to view the rendering while it's happening in real-time. And it works too !

Let's hear more test results !

A potential customer, with a question.

So, you can turn the accelerators on or off?

You also have options for gpu vs CPU rendering, and that improves your quality?

Sorry that was 2 questions.

Yes. GPU acceleration is switchable every time you enter the production (rendering) stage.

By default, your CPU will be using it's additional cores to accelerate the video streams. Therefore the more the cores the faster the rendering. The CPU acceleration is not switchable from within PD10. GPU acceleration however is fully switchable.

Give the trial version a try before you buy. Win 10, i7

It is a shame they have gone to all the trouble to implement 3D but still can't produce AVC @ 28mbps (which no doubt has become an accepted format). Nevermind ... will just have to keep hacking the .ini files. Panasonic SD9, Panasonic TM700, Panasonic SD600, GoPro HD Hero.

Hi Phil,
What cant you do with your Panasonic files? I got Intelligent SVRT to function (create a panasonic 28mbps profile) with the Panasonic sample files so I'm guessing that the Produce function works for you but the fixed parameters of the Disc end don't. What ini files are you referring to? (just curious)

Mmmmm....
Used the trial.
Loaded completed PD9 project using TM700 files
Produce tab AVC
Intelegent SVRT correctly identified the frame rate and bit rate but said no profile was available for SVRT.

Will try again tonight with new project or is it a trial limitation?

Edit: as the trial does not have high profile for .h264, I suspect this is why SVRT does not work. Shame I cannot test the only benefit of PD10 over PD9 before I purchase. Oh well, PD9 was a bargain price after all

Hi Phil,
When using the Full version of PD10 I had to remove/delete the previous custom profiles carried over from 9. As a workaround and in case the H264 issue might not apply, please rename the profile.ini file to something different e.g. profilexxx.ini (it's a fall back). Intelligent SVRT will then generate a new Profile without the PD9 ini causing a conflict.

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks Dafydd
I cannot get the trial version to produce any SVRT profiles compatible.
Pretty sure it is because High Profile for .h264 is not available.

Probably will pay for full version and hope your success is replicated on my set up. Panasonic SD9, Panasonic TM700, Panasonic SD600, GoPro HD Hero.

Hi Phil,
If it helps here's an SVRT (see image) for a Panasonic HDC-TM700 and as you can see a better Custom Profile has been offered and closer to the sample videos used.

I'm not sure the SD900 image will help. Delete a previous profile can result in a better Custom Profile.

Dafydd,

Somehow this thread got derailed. I was trying to get users to offer feedback on their PD10 tests as to performance and quality parameters.
