"Set Aspect ratio" question.

Could someone please check to see if accessing the "Set Aspect ratio" dialogue box crashes/freezes your system.

On my system when I load any video including the default nature.mpg onto the time line and try to change the aspect ratio PD either freezes or crashes.

If it is only my system then I can chase it up, if it is on other systems I will let Cyberlink know.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit version.

Thanks

Thanks djmorgan, but a bit of a bummer, I thought it might have been easy to just pass on the problem to Cyberlink.

Luckily I have a work around by just un-checking "maintain aspect ratio" in the PIP designer and stretching the sides of the 4:3 video to 16:9.

There must be something specific with my system that crashes the "Set Aspect Ratio" even with the default Nature.mpg, it worked perfectly fine in PD9.

Hi Robert,
I wonder if you can provide a sample - maybe later

First I'd like you to split the long clips you have up into smaller chunks and see what effect that has.

Right Click on a clip
select "Set Aspect Ratio"
Select "neither 4:3 or 16:9"
select Apply to all video clips
select OK.

I'm wondering if it is just the size of clip which is triggering the issue rather than a multiple number of clips which change (ripple change).

Added: I should add that like DJM, I too haven't had a problem.

Hi Dafydd,

I have tried multiple single small clips of Sony .MTS, GoPro HD .MP4, and as I mentioned even the default Nature.mpg.

When it first started the dialogue box would open up but as soon as I clicked on any option it would crash.

Now it seems that I can't even fully open the dialogue box. The box opens up blank and as soon as I click on it anywhere the top of the dialogue box shows "Not responding" I then click on the X to close down the box and PD crashes.

Here are my dxdiags if I have missed anything.

Hi Robert,
I'm perplexed and don't know the cause. Can you just do an uninstall/reboot/reinstall please?

Uninstall everything please. I use the Control Panel route.

I have 1005 still to install. I haven't come across your issue.
Dafydd

Well I did....

1. A complete un-install PD10, content packs 1&2, romance pack, wave editor, then a cold boot.

2. Re-install just PD10 placed nature.mpg onto time line, same problem, a blank "Set Aspect Ratio" dialogue box and PD crashes.

I have found over the years that when something goes wrong with PD a simple uninstall re-install rarely solves the problem. It is as though there is a hidden file somewhere that doesn't get un-installed and carries over the problem. Maybe that is why Cyberlink brought out the special un-install program for PD9.

Anyway I am not going to chase it down any further, I have a work around for PD10 and I still have PD9 on my system which works perfectly. I will just wait for the next patch or maybe PD14. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

Interesting, as I thought, I just went to set my "file" preferences in the new PD10 and they were set to what I had entered in the un-installed PD10.

So as I thought there are hidden files that are not removed when you un-install PD. How the hell can you get a clean install when you can't un-install the previous version without a complete system wipe and re-install of your operating system.

I know, I know you can ferret through the registry removing all mentions of Cyberlink and if you are lucky you might just get all of the entries as long as you don't accidentally delete one for PD9 and stuff up that program also. The "hidden" stuff is usually in the Windows registry. Cleaning that up by hand is not for the faint of heart. Jerry Schwartz

Hi Robert,

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

If I right click on any clip in the timeline and then choose Set Aspect Ratio and select
" Detect and Suggest " after 15 seconds of THINKING the program selects 16:9 (which is correct).
Then Click OK and the "Aspect Ratio Setting" (Not Responding)
Close "Aspect" window then PD10 WHITEOUT SCREEN

Tried with 3 different video file types, all cause crash.
Nature example from Cyberlink also causes similar problem but opens a BLANK "Aspect Ratio Setting"
window and freezes, then WhiteOut screen etc.

NOW....
Just loaded PD10 and tried on a Sandy Bridge Laptop and EXACTLY the same, even the different action of
the Nature clip. Complete duplication of problem ?????

Any ideas ???

Hi PatC,

Sorry to hear of your problem, yes it is sounds exactly the same as mine. At least it sounds more and more like a problem with PD10's aspect ratio module conflicting with something on our computers.

If you have to stretch any 4:3 videos to 16:9 you can do it in the pip designer as I mentioned above.

I guess it will just take some time before more and more people strike the same problem, I hope PD finds the solution for the first PD10 patch. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

I can confirm PatC's actions, same results here dialogue maybe badly coded or other fault to cause crash.

Does not crash with me when changing aspect ratio from 6.9 to 4.3 back and forth

When installing PD10 and its content packs would it make any difference in
which order the content packs are installed ? ? ?

I noticed that on the Cyberlink download page content pack II was above content pack I.

However after the main program install, I installed content pack I first and then pack II.
I did NOT install the Romance Pack.

Could this make any difference ? ? ?

It doesn't make a difference. After I un-installed PD10 and content packs I just installed PD10 by itself and still had the problem with the aspect ratio. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

Verifying...

Quote: Right Click on a clip
select "Set Aspect Ratio"
Select "neither 4:3 or 16:9"
select Apply to all video clips
select OK.

Selecting this option causes program to hang!!

Hi Fred,
Thank you for reporting a failure with the method I've been using, works for me with 925 build (same as the boxed version).

Dafydd;
Wasn't looking for a "works for me" reply..just validating that this issue exists on more than one person's system. I would say it is related to the program..not the system used. I am using 1005 build.

I just leave the setting at "detect aspect ratio automatically"...I will have to experiment more with pushing the settings around in PIP, etc.

I don't think that DJM was doing the same as James, Robert and I. I CAN change the aspect to 4:3 or 16:9 (as DJM did) without freeze. It is only when I follow your script that I freeze!!

I have the similar problem. The PowerDirector become freezed when I try to use this command. Sad. I've wrote to customer support, but they have started to learn me how to change the aspect ratio of the project. My system is WinVista 32 bit + 4 Gb RAM.

Working with the trial version, the program freezes when I select "set aspect ratio" from the pop-up menu. The dialog box is not fully drawn. I have to go into the PIP designer and manually resize the frame after turning off the "maintain aspect ratio" option.
