When making changes to photos....

My first post here...can anyone tell me when making changes to a photo,
does it actually change the -ORIGINAL- photo or not?

Just so I know to make another set someplace before changing things.

Thanks

Boots,

When you import photos into PhD & modify them in any way, your original photo remains just as it was. This applies whether you use the Export or Save As function. It's described as "non-destructive".

You'll know from the Help file, under Importing Photos, that you can select the options of:
1. Keeping it in its current location
2. Making a copy in a different location

Happy Editing,

Thanks Pix for the fast reply.

I chose to leave it in original location.
I have already close to 10.000 photos and really no need to double up.
My external drive will get to full as well.

So I can edit all I want and what? Does the program just remember what I done?
I am trying to figure out how this works if the original is untouched ?

And what if I decide to actually make that change to the Original...how do I do that.?

Thanks again.

It records all changes in it's "project" database, where it also keeps the catalog of all the pictures in the project. You can have multiple projects but this is not obvious and not implemented very well.

You can "reset" all your adjustments (and clear the adjustment history too if you like) for a picture, this allows you to start from scratch.

You can also revert to any stage in your adjustment history.

I don't know if all this is documented, as out of principle I never RTFM.

Danny, thanks for the answer.

I am still somewhat riddled by the program...hmm maybe I am just old.

I also try the to figure out the Album option...but I better read some more before asking any more questions.

I want to make sure I understand better before making changes with 10.000 photos.
Tagging would be another issue.

All I know is right now its a mess ggg
Thanks again.

Boots,

Like Danny, I usually only dig into the help file/manual when I can't find out by playing around. If you're just getting your head around the way the Library functions with albums, tagging, folders etc, checking out the help file is a good place to start.

Personally, I'd rate the PhD help file fairly highly. It's very instructional about how to do things with the software.

Thanks for the tip. I usually do that first but its not always clear to me.
I tried PICASA and it made a real mess of things and I didn't know what was what. grin

But I will take more care with this one.
Thanks again
