Dear all,

I am using PD 8 and considering to upgrade PD 9.

I wanted to use PD to do the following animations of the movie...
can someone tell me if I can do it on PD9 or it is no difference on PD8 or PD9 if I want to do it

if no, can I know which program I should buy for doing that particular animations

Thanks a lot!!

Hi Net,

I can see why you would want to create something like this!
The answer, in Norwegian, would be "Tja" or "Nja", which means neither
"yes" nor "no".

If you will devote some serious workload, going back and forth between
a good photo editor and PD9, then the answer can be "yes, something similar".
You have the opportunity to use multiple tracks to place the cut-out photos (png's)
on background of choice; either stills or video.

I suggest you have a look at this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=PDtoots#p/u/3/7Nm6XAsXbUQ
and see if you get some hints.
Next, I will suggest you wait for "Cranston" to show up on this forum.
To my best knowledge, he is the one to give you the best answer to you question.

Nina

Hi Net -

There are some parts of that video that could be replicated in PD8 or PD9, with a lot of work!

There would be quite a bit of photo manipulation work that would need to be done outside PD, or any video editing software. The images, throughout the video, have been "separated" from their backgrounds... in other words, the backgrounds have been made transparent. That's so that they can be laid over different scenes & moved on the screen independent of the background.

Image preparation could be done outside PD, but most animation could be done with PD's PiP Designer. PiP Motion, to my knowledge, won't allow an image to spin through 360° in all planes. For example - in the video at about 0:35, images rotate in a way that PD cannot replicate.

Here are some PDtoots tutorials that would assist IF you were going to use PD for such a project...

Hi Net,
While there are some parts that cant be done in PD9. Many can be. You'll have to carry out photo edits in an Image Editor and then bring those into PD9.

Using Motion Paths movement will give a feeling of depth - very easy to create.

The majority of editors should be quite capable of carrying out the tasks I saw and no specialist capability is needed. You'll just need time, patience and effort.

Have a go and see what you come up with. It is far better you try and fail than not to try at all.

I went and asked him what he used to make that video. His response can bee seen if you double click the you tube window and bring it up in you tube. All you need is the main software, then add the motion module upgrade, and $1200 bucks and you can to it too. Oh.. and a very good computer...

That is a very good video too... but an awful lot of "things" flying around. A lot of that can be done with PD9, I wonder how long it took to make that video....

Bubba, I knew exactly what program used,
but I cannot even hint in direction of programs here, it seems.

Another thing,

Hi Nina -

Recently, we got a PM (PDtoots) about whether PD would be able to create a certain effect. He sent a link to a video http://youtu.be/bY5L5ittLQk

... the effect he was after occurs at 2:06 - 2:13

No - it's not exactly the same as Net's original question - but I had to tell the person that PD wouldn't be able to recreate the same effect because its motion works only in 2 planes.

As a little example, I sent him the attached video showing the best I could manage with PD. It shows that a degree of depth can be achieved... just a bit "flat".

Agreed. But you can "kind of" create the illusion of perspective and a 3rd plane.

Hi Cranston,
When I first saw your video about a year ago I was impressed. My opinion hasn't changed. I think I have those computer screen images you created and sent me somewhere. Transparent background png's created in an image editor can be used to great effect in a video and when they are combined with motion paths, multiple tracks, chroma key are a useful means to put depth to a finished video.

Hey Bubba -

Here's an interesting thing...

Go to http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/tutorial/ and watch "A Revolution in Video Editing". You might spot something similar to the video Net linked.

I'm still so new with PD9, I hadn't discovered yet that the dimensions of pictures/objects can't be changed and automated. wow - that really is a shortcoming.

But in the posted Swing video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3DTKi26ln4

--in the first two examples, it's clear that the video is still straight on, but in the example with the moon and the comet, it sure looks like perspective is changing correctly.

--so confused by this discussion--?

rbowser -

It may have been confusing because I (kind of) expanded the scope of the thread.

When the Swing effect is applied to a video, perspective is maintained.

You'll see what I mean in the attached video.

OH--OK-- I see the perspective is right in that clip, Tony. Why wasn't it maintained in the other clip, when the camera remained straight on?

The video showed here is so professional, I hope I can make something like this with PD.

One more question, does PD8 or 9 can do the effect at this video 0.16-0.19

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBRw8Ij3igY

Sorry that I have so many questions...

Hi Net -

You don't have to apologise for asking questions. It's a user-to-user forum... so it's all about questions & different approaches to them!

Yes - PD could produce something like that effect. There are two video layers - the one with the child with the wobbly head & the slideshow laid over it.

Using the slideshow templates or building your own (using any of the 150 transitions), you could make something like that in PD.

Have a look at this PDtoots tutorial to see some of the possibilities with PD's slideshow templates...

Hi Net,

Tony beat me to it!
You will have a good range of varieties to chose from to make an interesting
slideshow in PD9. With the use of several tracks, Magic Motion, Modify, keyframes and trasitions-
and if you spend some time preparing your images in a photo editor
you can make a unique slideshow of your own.
OR- you can chose to make your slideshow using a template in PD9, use
a template in parts of the slideshow and combine with your "handmade" parts.
I spent 15 min doing this just now:

(could not get it embedded)

Here's some other links for you:

I'm certain others will give you more hints, but you should really just
try different things for yourself.
