When I modify one of the predetermined menus or default menus, I go to preview and the first part of the clip in the timeline plays in the center of the menu. I like this, but is there a way I could change what part of the clip plays in the opening of the menu? Hope that made sense, otherwise I could try and explain better. Thank you in advance.

I'm pretty sure I understand what you mean. I think you are talking about the little "previews" that play in the navigation buttons.

If that's what you're talking about, the answer is a resounding no. It always plays the first few (15?) seconds of the clip.

This is a real pain in the neck. I usually just don't use the "buttons", or I pull some other trick (which escapes me at the moment) to hide them. Jerry Schwartz

I see. Yes. that is what I meant. It may not be so annoying if you could select what you wanted played in this little snippet. If you think of the "other trick" or some other work around let me know. Thanks for replying!

I don't know how well it works, but if you modify the beginning of your video on the timeline to cut out any garbage at the start, your preview in the menu will look a bit better. By garbage I mean a few black frames or a color board with text.

I don't modify my video's start just for the sake of the Menu Preview.
But if you are determined to do it, you can try. Carl312: Windows 10 64-bit 8 GB RAM,AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHz,ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB,240GB SSD,two 1TB HDs.

The problem with that is you wind up with your viewers drumming their fingers waiting for the main event. Jerry Schwartz

I don't have more than about 5 frames of black at the beginning of my videos, I don't literally have garbage at the start of my videos. Carl312: Windows 10 64-bit 8 GB RAM,AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHz,ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB,240GB SSD,two 1TB HDs.

How many seconds before the actual chapter starts? Jerry Schwartz

How many seconds before the actual chapter starts?

Zero seconds. In PD the first chapter is always the beginning of the video on the timeline at 00:00:00:00.

If the black was to last for 5 frames, that is 0.167 seconds for NTSC. Or 167 milliseconds. Carl312: Windows 10 64-bit 8 GB RAM,AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHz,ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB,240GB SSD,two 1TB HDs.

We must be talking about two different things. I thought that the question had to do with what shows on the menus as "previews" of the chapters.

That can't be controlled without modifying the chapter itself, and that would show during playback.

As far as I know, PD plays the first 15 seconds of the start of the video on the timeline in the Main/Root menu.

What I have noticed, if you have a bit of black at the start of the video, the image in the thumbnail is black.

It also plays the first few seconds of video at the chapter points in the Chapter pages.
Generating those 'clips' is part of the the time it takes to do the first 21% of the Create Disk burning.

You can control where you set your chapter point in the Edit Module. That would have some effect on the thumbnail playing for that chapter.

Fact is there is no good way to control what is shown in the thumbnails of the menu.

It doesn't really sound like it can be controlled without modifying the beginning of the clip. However, you wouldn't in all cases want to do that anyway. I guess just live with it or figure out something else with a custom menu.
