Transition Between Clips Not Working

For software that is otherwise both powerful and easy to learn, I'm pulling my hair out trying to get transitions between links to work properly. I would like one clip to dissolve (or fade, or blur, etc.) directly into the next clip without a blank black screen between the clips. No matter what I try, I cannot avoid that blank black screen. Here's what I've tried so far:

- Just a pre- transition.
- Just a post- transition.
- Both a pre- transition and a post- transition.
- Placing the transition in a gap between the clips (not accepted)
- Left clicking on a transition (nothing happens)
- Right clicking on a transition (only an option to "remove")
- Dragging the edge of the transition (nothing happens)
- Looking for a "switch" button mentioned in Help instructions (cannot locate)
- Looking for anything that will permit me to change the start or end times of the transitions (cannot locate)
- Pushing the clips so that they overlap and selecting "insert"
- Pushing the clips so that they overlap and selecting "overwrite"

No matter what I try, I cannot get the transition to work smoothly or the way the Help instructions say it should; there is always that blank black space between the clips. Thanks in advance for any help.
