I am new to Power Director 9. I come from the film + video industry. I just began editing my first video on Power Director and I can't fine a simple desolve transition. How do I desolve between my clips, and how do I determain the length of the desolve? Please help, thanks.

Try Fade from the Transition "room".

You can set the default duration under Preferences>Editing.

Drag the ends of an already-in-place transition to change its duration.

There is lots of discussion available here regarding overlap vs cross transition. Use search to look at a few of them.

Fade may be what you are looking for. To adjust length, grab the edge of the transition in the time line and drag it. Go in both directions to keep it centered. __________________________________

Dragging it to the end of a clip and releasing it will result in a fade-to-black. Dragging to the beginning of a clip and releasing it will result in a fade-in from black.

If you drag and release the fade transition straddling the interface between the two clips, it will default to an overlap transition. You can change to a cross transition by right-clicking the transition and selecting "Switch to Cross Transition"

You will probaby want to spend a little time experimenting with all this.

Good Luck!

You can also use the PiP function for this. Place the clips in PiP tracks and click "modify", then the PiP motion tab, the center one, and choose exactly where each fade in and out begins and ends using key frame placement..
I hope this helps!
Cheers!

Do you still have PD8? PD9 doesn't have PiP tracks. Good advice, though. That's how I often do it. In PD9 you also have to fade the audio separately. __________________________________

Hey Jaime,
Yeah I do still use PD 8. I had just assumed,(wrongly I take it) that the PiP function would also be in PD9. It is such an awesome tool.

Alik, I apologize that I steered you in an unobtainable option and for that I am sorry.

I will stop adding my tips on PD9 until such time as I get to work with it personally and know what all it does and does not have as compared to earlier editions.

Once again, My Apologies!
Cheers!

Kevin,
Your tips are usefull, and your right about PIP tracks, they're in PD9. They're just listed as normal video tracks that you can place tittles, pip etc in.

Kevin, it all still works much the same. Instead of PiP tracks, you have 99 video tracks that will provide exactly the same function. No need to stop participating. Just didn't want anyone looking for something named PiP. Your tips are always appreciated. __________________________________

Hey Kevin,Jaime-esque and ClancM,
Thanks you all for your useful tips. Last night I experienced another anoying issue: I am additing our Alaska trip. assigning chapter numbers to every locations we'd visited. Chapter one reacted immediately when I clicked the chapter room. Since then the chapter room does not add anymore chapters. What to do? Any tip is greatly appreciated

Alik,
You really need to check the forum for this answer first, if no luck then start a new thread for it. Otherwise when folks go to look for answers they get side tracked. Saving the world, one goofy video and meme at a time.
