I mainly use PowerDirector!!! so do my PDtoots colleagues.

We each use a variety of screen capture software programs to record screen action... and different graphics software for image processing. Cranston & I mostly use Paint.NET for that, but we use whatever we can to suit the purpose.

I think there are brand names all over the Bookmark shortcuts (as there SHOULD be if it doesn't compete with a CL product). We help by educating, NOT recommending..but MENTIONING or SUGGESTING should no be mis-construed as VALIDATING.

With Carsten having a brand new computer to play with, a well deserved prize I must add, he is allowed to bend the rules for a while, until the novelty wears off and he is confronted with all the 64 bit issues.

I hear ya’ fellahs. And yes Robert, it looks like I’ll be heading over to the world of 32 more bits and Optimus Technology too. From what I’ve read here in the forums, it looks like fun. As the integrated card does all the work while the 1GB card sleeps?

But since it was mentioned, perhaps now would be a good time to ask for clarification on exactly what the rules are with respect to…

- Naming screen capture software (free or retail), and including links to where they can be obtained.
- Linking to other third party software/tools (free or retail), that one uses in the creation of, or to supplement, a project created in PD.
- Placing one’s Youtube channel logo in an attached instructional image, diagram, or illustration, used to amplify on an answer.
- Promoting one’s Youtube channel, by placing a link to the channel at the bottom of a post, in one’s forum signature.

I was told, that three of the above were in violation of CL’s forum rules, or were contrary to CL’s wishes. So out of caution, and in order to be careful to not violate any rules, I sent James1 a PM reply instead.
If there have been changes to the rules, it would be nice if they could be published, so members could reference them when in doubt.

1. Software video screen capture programs - likely to be a competitor at some point. The one mentioned in bookmarks had to be referenced back to CL.
2. Software tools links - if a product is a competitor, then no link. If the product has a competitor mentioned at the same location then no link is allowable. If the software is not a direct competitor then yes, it's ok. However should a post contain a link to a product deemed a "competitor" that post can be removed, no notification, just zapped. Then the question is "who's the judge"? I referred the one's I bookmarked to CyberLink. It's often my call, as I read all the posts. I do check out any link posted, heck I'm interested in some of the stuff we all use. I have a long list of useful stuff which I previously made available to editors and some editors contributed to.
3. Direct advertising of a YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo channel is not acceptable when placed as a NEW TOPIC on the forum. Posting a link to a video displaying a solution or a problem issue, or of a first time effort etc such as "come see what I made with PD" is fine. It is the "Pro-type" advert for one's YouTube etc channel which are not allowed and there is an opportunity for a Signature instead. Note the difference, one is direct advertising without a member enquiry and the other is in response to a member's enquiry.
4. Signatures, if CL gets upset by your signature you'll need to change it. Use the signature route is a good option especially if it is to a location which shows off your video editing PD skills. I wouldn't deem that as "advertising", just a statement of who you are and where you come from.
5. Product name dropping. Be sensible, so long as it isn't an advert, promotional or a competitor then such use should be ok. If I'm in doubt I refer it to CL for confirmation of action. If I "strip" a thread off the forum, it is referred to CL and has the opportunity to be restored.

CyberLink has three forums (that I know of): this one, the DirectorZone & MoovieLive forums. This is the only one (for some reason) where the regulations aren't linked on the forum pages. I assume they're all the same.

My reading of those regulations gives rise to a bit of ambiguity. You're right - the rules under which we participate here ought to be clear.

Like I said, it's ambiguous.

There is no jury. There is CyberLink - with a (sometimes) difficult to define set of forum regulations & there's the moderator (Dafydd) who determines whether rules have been broken.

Some things are very clearly unacceptable but other things are open to interpretation. THAT'S what is confusing for members. There should be be NO interpretation!

THAT is precisely what I'm saying. If the forum management rules were precise, & not open to interpretation, there would be NO NEED for a moderator to jump.

The reworked (if it is) version of the rules, unfortunately, still leaves the word "advertising" (in 4.) open to interpretation. Members are still in the same position (lack of clarity) as before.

I'm sure you don't want me to quote examples here.

Yes - I agree - we aren't still talking exactly about the topic header. James' original question required software to be named, so it begs the question about what's OK & what's not.

I not sure how screen recorders are in 'breach' of any 'house rules', I use to use the Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 - it's free!

But then I discovered My Screen Recorder 3.3 -i t's free as well albeit for a watermark but the upgrade is pretty reasonable.

This software records in a more 'user friendly' format (not AVI) and also records in high definition
