PD9 Periodically 'Crashes' at 'Splash Screen' Start Up and Always Knocks Out the PC Sounds Volume.

I have had this problem since I bought PD9 earlier in the year with starting up and Periodically failing at the PD9 splash screen and it 'crashes' and gives the mandatory windows message box of PD9 must close and do I want to submit an error report etc 'BUT' when it crashes like that it ALWAYS knocks out my PC sounds volume in the system tray completely 'ie' from full to zero.

Now the reason I haven't followed this problem up is because PD9 (touchwood) ALWAYS boots up fine on the 2nd attempt when it crashes.

And this problem only happens maybe once or twice per week but I'm kinda wondering what happens when it doesn't start up on the 2nd attempt ?

Attached is my DXDiag and I updated the graphics driver a couple of days ago and PD9 crashed again this morning.

Given the fact that when it crashes it impacts the sound on your system, the first thing I would look at are your sound card drivers.

Based on your DXDiag, it looks like there are both Realtek and Soundblaster drivers loaded (I assume you 2 sound cards?). A quick search online shows updated drivers from the manufacturers are available for both. I would start there, rather than relying on Windows update. PowerDirector 10 Ultra
Dell XPS Studio - i7 3.4 GHz / 8 GB RAM / Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

hi SkullyHB and many thanks for your input.

Yes, the default is Realtek but I had a 5.1 card put in last year and that was SoundBlaster by Creative.

I will most certainly look up new drivers for the both and report back.

Stephanie.

Not sure if this is of any use to the problem but below is the reporting Error I get in my event viewer in Control Panel / Administrative Tools. ....Okay, to the drivers...bbs

Faulting application pdr9.exe, version 9.0.0.2930, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x3c24bc8d.

okay, i've run the sound blaster update on my pc and i'm not actually convinced it has updated the driver (1478 was the original according to the update service) and i think it was more orientated to installing creative's latest products !

and as for realtek audio well I'm afraid I found the site to be a nightmare with soo many different options and products that I actually just don't know what I'm doing.

My Realtek HD Audio panel says it is Driver 5.10.0.5998 installed but I cannot see anything close to that online and I'm actually worried about installing rogue drivers or even wrong drivers.

I don't have this problem with Intel as they scan and tell me Exactly what is what and what I need.

Perhaps I should run my Belarc Advisor to see if I can make any sense of the drivers. And I'm also confused as my Realtek control panel says 'Gigabyte Technology' so where do I look for updated drivers ? On Gigabyte website or Realtek website ?

Totally Confused..

If you're only using one audio device, you could disable the other device with the Device Manager and not worry about its driver version and perhaps stabalizing the PD9 startup.

Hi Gary, thanks for that suggestion and I have just been to device manager and disabled my Realtek Audio as I wasn't using it.

Checked that all my sounds and video are still working

Booted up PD9 (didn't crash) and all is okay there.

Soo, I guess it's a case of waiting now to see if PD9 still crashes at start up periodically ?

And if it does then maybe it's my SB 5.1 VX Audio at fault ?

I will report back as and when.

Soo, after disabling my Realtek audio my PD9 has been opening and starting up real sweet for 4 days ..

Until Today !

Just opened up PD9 and it hung at the splash screen and then Crashed PD9 with the same windows error reporting box..and knocked my system tray audio volume from nearly full to off ! ..le sigh !!

And of course after the program closed it then opened perfectly on the second attempt. As per usual !

Soo, I'm at a loss as to what it might be ? Unless it's my SB 5.1 audio ?

And why does it only do it once or twice a week ?

Yet another mystery to be solved..

Ideas anyone ?

I hunted high and low for Creative SB 5.1 VX Drivers last night and it seems that the drivers I have installed are the latest for "XP" despite the fact they are 2008.

There is an updated SB 5.1 Driver on Creative that was issued in 2009 but that is 'ONLY' for Vista and Windows 7. And yes, I tried it too and obviously it said my computer system was not supported. And on DriverMax there were several Creative SB5.1 VX drivers available but the most up to date version is indeed the 2008 driver I have installed for XP.

Soo, I disabled both sound systems last night just out of curiosity and PD9 opened up with no issues at all. In fact PD9 was opening like a rocket yesterday and that was with nothing else running AND with everything running....made no difference it just booted up quick and smooth. And this morning PD9 booted up no problem whatsoever.

Soo, I just don't know. Of all the problems I've had with the computer and my programs this year this PD9 Error is the only issue left. There has to be a reason but why is it only every 3 or 4 days that it crashes ? I kinda half expect the same problem with PhotoDirector 2011 as it too has the splash screen but everything is tickety boo there. So maybe something with the audio in PD9 is conflicting somewhere when the exe is clicked ? (details of what i mean in link below)

I came across the link below last night. It's not about PowerDirector but it is about programs crashing. It is written by / for Steinberg Cubase Audio. I'm hoping that posting it here is not against rules and regs but if it is I will delete it from this thread.

I wondered if the mentions of the words 'Steinberg Cubase' on the page could be substituted for 'Cyberlink PD9' ?
It certainly got me thinking about what might happen when I click the PD9 exe.

I was also wondering if the PD9 Crash problem I have periodically is listed on the Steinberg page...somewhere.

Anyway, here's the link.

Okay, can Dafydd or someone who is head of the forums take up this case to Cyberlink Technicians ?

I wrote to them a couple of times yesterday and submitted a ticket and they asked me a whole lotta questions and asked for my DXDiag and told me to change the display to 16 bit etc etc and so I did, But I did more. I submitted not only my DXDiag but also the dump file when my PD9 crashes and I wrote and told them in GREAT DETAIL about the problem here.

And..my PD9 Crashed this morning, knocked out the sounds, first thing and so I guess I can discount setting my screen to 16 bit colour.

But not only that I got 2 responses from Cyberlink Tech asking me to supply a DXDiag and the dump error file (which I've already done) AND they are asking me where I bought my PD9 from and where did I download it from AND whether itz a 32 bit or 64 bit software ? I mean, it only says in my message to them god knows how many times ???

Soo, this is crazy and can Dafydd take this up or have I got to answer, and re answer and perhaps thirdly answer the same basic questions to Cyberlink Tech hoping this may get sorted sometime ?

SummersSapphire;
You are using the embedded Graphic chip on your motherboard. There is no dedicated memory for that GPU and it is using shared system memory. This can cause intermittant and ongoing problems during the video editing (or even the STARTUP) process.

The crashes (sound and program) could be due to lack of video resources. I suggest that you purchase and install a separate video card. You should have a PCI Express x16 slot open on that GigaByte motherboard..I believe. This should eliminate most (if not all) of the issues you are seeing.

Caveats: The fact that you are only running a Dual-core processor in a 32 Bit environment does have some additional issues associated with it, but the Video Card is KEY here. Also, I do not know the Wattage of the Power Supply Unit (PSU) in your machine, so make sure the card you buy is in-line with the abilities of the Power Supply.

Hi Carl and Fred and many thanks for your contributions here.

Cyberlink had me change my default audio from Creative SB 5.1 VX to Realtek HD Audio yesterday to see if PD9 still crashes periodically at start up only.

I also supplied them with the event viewer crash log from my system.

Soo, i started PD9 up maybe a dozen times yesterday on and off and everything was sweet but it only happens every 3 or 4 days so we shall see.

I understand they are in Taiwan but I do get frustrated sometimes when I'm repeating the very basics of the problem.

I have many programs on this pc, inclusive of Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum HD and TrakAx and the start up crash periodically with PD9 is the 'Only' problem I have and I guess reading other member's PD9 problems here perhaps I ought to be thankful for a periodical crash.

I'd like to point out that I don't have any problems whatsoever with doing anything at all with PD9 in the editing / creating sense and I'm really thrilled with the software and love it to bits over my other 2 video editing programs plus all the others I have trialled. PD9 IS the bees knees for me and I think this is why I get soo upset and frustrated when things aren't right.

Soo, yes, I will have to upgrade my computer but not at this moment as I don't have the readies so perhaps towards the end of the year but goodness knows what specs I would need for PD9 ?

Anyway, in the meantime I will see how far I can get with my Realtek HD Audio sounds without PD9 crashing every few days.

Many thanks.

Stephanie.

A good morning to all and I'm really going to tempt fate here with this update !

It's now been 3 whole days since I made my Realtek HD Audio the default audio and I also disabled my Creative SB 5.1 VX.

I have started up PD9 at every opportunity whilst I've been working in the same room and I have to report that PD9 has not even crashed the once ! So there, I said it staring fate square on in the face !

I've also started PD9 under every resource situation I could think of ie: scanning system with ESET, downloading from youtube and PD9 opens like a dream every time. And I've been opening PD9 maybe well over 20 times per day.

Soo, I will leave it here for the now and give it a while longer before I can say yay, I think the problem has been cracked with the help of you good people here...

So what is on my inquisitive mind is why would my SB 5.1 VX make my PD9 crash and Not my Realtek ?

But It's not so important I guess and all I strive for is PD9 / Computer harmony...and I seem to have it ...for the now !

I Will give it a while longer.

Just thought I should report that my PD9 has just crashed on start up, knocking out the sound, and that is with SB 5.1 VX disabled and I am currently using my Realtek HD Audio.

Soo, that was 4 days before it crashed and once again PD9 started up sweet on the 2nd attempt.

None of my other programs are affected in anyway and this crash is the only problem to date I have on my pc.
