Crash when opening a specific pds file

I've been working on the same pds file for over a month now. I recently made several additions to the project and saved my work, but now when I attempt to re-open this file I get an error message saying "PowerDirector has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." This happens each time I attempt to open this file, while my other saved pds files open fine. Please tell me there is a way I can alleviate this issue. I've spent hours upon hours on this thing and people are expecting a lot out of it. The file in question loads to 77% before the error message appears and forces me to close.

I have not renamed or relocated any of the projects assets. I did delete several clips that were in the library but weren't being used because I suspected them of maybe being corrupt, but still no luck. I had recently been experiencing a bad rash of frequent crashes with the file before this larger issue has presented itself.

Hi,
Looking at you Dxdiag file, your machine has bare minimum specs for pd9 and any editing like adding effects and transition. Windows Xp only recognizes 4gb memory and Video editing is CPU hungry!! I surmise that you haven't got the reources needed after Windows takes its share of memory.

Changing the project (even removing things) can change the way it acts. Before the other editors get in here and talk about the possibility of corruption, etc., I have a couple of items I suggest you consider:
1. Update your video card drivers ( http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-270.61-whql-driver.html )
2. Install SP3 for Windows XP (Using Windows Update OR http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&displaylang=en )

Reboot and try again!

Thanks for the replies. I updated my video drivers and installed SP3 but still no luck. If I were to uninstall and then reinstall PD9 may that work? Will my pds files still be available if I do so?

Yep, this problem happens to me too. I have .pds files that I've worked on for 5 months now, and sometimes when I open them, they shut down my program at that magic 80% - for some reason, at 80% it acts different. I keep trying and trying and finally get them to open. Doesn't happen all the time, but it did happen last night.. and after the 6th try, the file finally opened. One time a file never did open, so I had to go to the automatic backup saved files in C drive (where PD saves them automatically) and open it... and that seems to work if everything else fails.

Did you update your DX8 to 10? as I do not think you can use DX11, which PD9 is built for. Your machine is struggling to run PD9 much less do anything with it. YOu may need to dump the project and start over. I have my auto save set to 2 minutes going to a chosen folder so if I have any crashes I just go load up one of the latest saved files. When I get done on a project that took a couple weeks I may have a couple hundred saved files or more. When I am done with the project I will delete them. So when you start having a problem you can go back to a good save and go from there.

dale9532 probably the same problem with you.

That is why we recommend to download the trial version first, because a LOT of people even with brand new machines can run PD9, but not do anything in it after they have it up and ruining, also use NORMAL preview not HD.

This appears to be the OLD DXDIAG. Please re-run the dxdiag command and attach the new file.

I have seen this error occur in earlier versions of PD related to MPEG-2 splitter.ax. This codec/filter is deprecated in XP..not sure if this is the cause/solution, though. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd390721%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Unfortunately, Cyberlink does NOT have any utility to validate or repair corrupt project files (at least not one publicly available).

I suggest that the problem is directly related to your machine. It will not support/run PD9 (even though you are 64bit).
The issue is "Dedicated video memory". You only have 64MEG and you need >512 to run PD9 comfortably. Unfortunately, this is not something you can change.

Some may recommend more memory (greater than 6 GIG) and this may relieve SOME of the issues for you, but not all will go away, as this is an unsupported environment for PD9. That is why you see delays sometimes, and not others...the program is trying to use cache memory and will struggle depending on what is available and what else is running.

The manufacturer included a version of PD8 and THAT probably will run on your laptop. Many people use that for laptop environments (I am just suggesting). Hope this helps!!
