Hi ClancM,
I think it's great that you look to more experienced editors using PD for inspiration, creativity
and knowledge how to do things. And, what better place to seek knowledge in editing with
PD than with Cranston! He can make things with PD that the majority of us don't have
a chance to (easy) replicate. Took him years to achieve that.
But if/when you "snitch" something and then
publish it with "created by....", then you probably should have
asked the person first, or also publish from who you have "snitched" what in the intro or ending.
Let me give you another example:
on this forum we often post screenshots- to illustrate what we mean or giving directions
via the image. Sometimes, "PowerDirector" will show in the screenshot. If I then put- let's
say - "created by Nina, PetitPoisVideo" on it, it can very easily be read by someone as if
I created/made/am involved with the making of the software PowerDirector.
(We often wrongly assume everybody on this planet are experienced wanderers in the
wilderness of computing and internet)
Create is a huge word, and we should use it carefully. Did I in the above example create
anything? Hardly.
I used a tool to cut out something that was already there, made/created
by somebody else. A tool that is availible for everyone. I just used it- because I can, because
I paid for it when I paid for my OS.
I could, perhaps as an alternative say: "screenshot made/(created ?) by....."
Every now and then I make small videos just for fun- to show my colleagues at
gatherings. I can then "snitch" bits and pieces from older sitcoms/series on YT. These 3-5 min videos I can
of course never publish or put my name on. Because all I did was
use a tool to cut out something
that was already there.
It's not easy to navigate in today's jungle of possibilities.
We can only do our best, and hope that for the most part we'll be ok.
Look forward to see more of your videos!
Nina
