Muting Clips not remembered/Empty track removal

[Don't you just love a newbie? We purchase the software, and for a while shamelessly ask lots of stupid questions, until we finally reach some comfort zone, or expertise, or else just fade away into non-activity.]

I have several clips that I have muted. I mainly use one audio clip that I've processed, and mix it in with about 10% of one camera's audio, to give it a touch of "live room".

Problem is, when closed the project last night, then reopened to edit this morning, all the clips were unmuted. It's like PD "forgot" the setting. This seems a bug.

Also: I had ended up with an empty track 2 (Track 1, 3 & 4 were all occupied). Remove Empty Tracks did nothing. On a complete whim, I moved 3 & 4 up to 2 & 3 (leaving 4 as the empty track). Remove Empty Tracks now succeeded. Also a bug?

I'm almost brand new: PowerDirector Ultra64 9.0.0.2504. Are these behaviors considered bugs? Chuck Puckett

On a related note, it would actually be better to remove the audio entirely from some clips. Seems like it might reduce files size, and would certainly fix my problem (I discover one can not select multiple clips and "Mute Audio" on all of them. Must be done individually. Pain) Chuck Puckett

Chuck,

To your first question about the forgotten mutes. This is just how PD9 works. If you are not going to use the audio on any tracks that are muted, you can seperate the audio from the video and then remove it. See attachments.

For question 2, it is possible that the track might not be empty. To test, select "Movie Mode" for the preview window, then press the end key. This will take you to the end of all media is the various tracks.

Also, you may not be able to remove track 2. Seems to me I read that somewhere. I could very well be wrong about that though.

Hope this helps.

Hal,

Ithelped a lot. Thanks. Surprised that Muting is not remembered. Everything else on the context (right-mouse) menu appears to be "permanent".

GUI should strive for consistency. Menu item should therefore at the very least be "Temporarily mute clip".

Wish I could get rid of these pesky app hangs. I am presuming I have jumped out to a bleeding edge by having purchased PD9 Ultra64, and therefore can expect frequent bug fix releases. Is Cyberlink conscientious about pushing those out for new versions? Do I get mail, or should I frequently check?

Chuck,

Glad that helped.

As to the muting, I think the programers were of the mindset that muting a track was only useful for editing purposes and that if we, the editors, wanted to silence a track we should remove the audio. I do this automatically now and rarely think of it any more.

Patches are regularly mentioned here on the forum.

I have a question for you Hal,

if say, I remove the audio from the videos I want muted, save, exit. Open again. Then through editing, realise I want the audio back on one of the video clips I've removed audio from....how would I get the audio back? Keeping in mind that this video clip has been cropped and edited in other various ways so dragging the original video file back down would be illogical as I would have to RE-EDIT everything again. Also, I can't "undo" because I've saved and quit.

I agree with Chuck about what he said about Muting. I've been using Mute for the previous versions of PD and it doesn't quite make sense to have mute as temporary in PD9. I mean, in what situation would you want it to UNMUTE when you close and open PD? Especially when you SAVED it unmuted! If you save it whilst Muted, it should load up Muted!

I find it slightly annoying as well since all previous versions of PD9 contradicts this.

Hi,
The Mute track issue was reported at the Beta test stage. For PD8 users who carry over a project or for an editor who saves a project with a muted part, the position is the mute action isn't save-able.

Hal has directed you to the workaround - which I use to.

The next patch may correct the situation.

Duong. What I do, if I wished to have a fall back correction, I would create an Audio track and place the unwanted audio clips into it. I would then "Disable" the track by selecting the "eye" icon on the left of the video track. the Disable track would not play the audio and the clips can be dragged out when "Enabled". I hope that helps.

Dafydd

Thanks for the advice guys.
I have just encountered another problem:

If you look at my uploaded screenshots.

Picture 1 shows the initial starting position of my editing.
As you can see, the clips I have muted, I have Unlinked the audio and deleted it.

However, when I try to move a clip (shown in Picture 2) and I "Insert" it in the place of another clip....

.... The video is pushed out of the way to make room for it, BUT the AUDIO ISN'T! (see picture 3). I've drawn red lines showing which audio corresponds to what video. The video + audio ISN'T unlinked or anything, so why is it doing this???

The only way to fix this is if I individually UNLINK the audio from the video and MOVE it back! EVERY TIME!!! This is so annoying!

It's making for some seriously stressful editing....
I'm really contemplating going back to PD8 :'(

In PD9 the in the preferences-editing section the option to "Link all tracks" is now just that, an option. It was a default and the only way in PD8. PD9 allows more flexability with the timeline for more creative editing. Win 10, i7

HDedit - Thank you. You're a lifesaver! I was about to kill myself over this.

I do find it hard to think of a situation where someone would want their tracks "Unlinked" when indirectly moving them and then "Linked" when directly moving them....

However, thanks again

Actually, when you get into complicated editing, it is usefull. One day you may find it the case as well. I frequently turn the feature on and off depending the type of editing in question. Win 10, i7

I make youtube videos and holiday compilation videos. I've not yet found the need for what you mentioned.

Do you have any of your videos online? I'd very much like to watch a complicated video you speak of.
Maybe I can learn a thing or 2.

Just pondering the thought of an easily accessible LINK/UNLINK button as part of the main UI. A whole new icon to speed things up, EZ on, EZ off. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

In absolute agreement Barry.
And it was been requested during beta. Along with a one click “Lock All Tracks” option.
Owing to PD9 new design, these 2 features should and need to be easy accessible, via a tab/button/icon, right there on the main interface (next to Split-Modify-Fix/Enhance-PowerTools, etc.)
