Backing up an upgrade

Hi, I have PD 4 and want to upgrade.
When I purchase just the upgrade and download it, will I then be able to back up the file to a disc or dose it automatically unzip without the opportunity to do so?
Basicly I'm just asking if I just buy the software and XP needs reinstalling, can I upgrade from a disc I create?
