I have never ever dedicated one computer with an absolutely clean system to just do video editing.

I have reviewed and used all PowerDirector's since version 2.0. I have used umpteen other software products and have access and used a good smattering of video editing software. ALL have been on a USER style system which had "rubbish and clutter" one would expect on your own PC.

Will you have problems.... you might...you could. Do I get problems? None that worry me with the video editors. I have presently 3 video editing programs on my system and 6 video capture programs, with 3 specialist screen capture and rendering software.

The most problems you'll get is with how you've set up your own PC. More on that later if you want to know.

Thank you for that! Yes absolutely would like more info as I am now setting up the computer to hang the software on. Got suggestions? I am paying attention to their stated requirements.

Okay, follow CyberLink's spec recommendations. I know they've upted the minimum as the capability of computers has progressed.

The area you need to look at closely are.
1. Unnecessary software background access to the internet
2. Necessary software access.

Make all updates of Anti-Virus manual actions - never auto-update as it will interfere with rendering/editing etc.
Make the Firewall block nearly all Software background access for updates - there are exceptions which you'll have to decide are okay. I would have your Firewall ask you each time... For example Mozilla Firefox (web browser) needs access to the internet and updates are useful and apply when you initiate the program.
Restrict cookie and up your security settings in the Firewall.
The aim is to not have any background intrusion or programs running which will/could upset video editing AND will make your computer more secure.

I've shut down and deleted MSN from all systems here.... it is an intrusive background running program.

I do NOT allow PD access to the internet without referral (SmartSound Music files are the main need for this program to have access).

Common sense rules...If it ain't bust why fix it!

I most certainly don't use my computer solely for video editing, and - knock on wood - I've had relatively few problems.

Please tell me if it would be beneficial simply to unplug from the router when using PD5. Thanks,

Dafydd, wouldn't it be easier to just unplug the internet connection while using PD than changing your firewall settings everytime? Or do you never use auto-update and so on all the time?

The issue is background running programs and auto-updating.

Keyboard: Ctrl+Alt (hold down) and then Delete will bring up the Task Manager, look up under Processes and see what you have running in the background.

I would rather apply updates manually to programs when and if needed - I don't operate an open door firewall...I have an effective set up.

I don't "unplug" the network connection - I see no need to do so.

PowerDirector works effectively without needing to connect to the internet, PD's QuickTracks SmartSound will need an internet connection to download the music files.
