PowerDirector Ver 9 - Should I Upgrade?

Ok, PowerDirector ver 9 has been out for awhile now. I have PD ver 8 (HE) (I purchased with Media Suite). I have had only a few problems with the software freezing on my 64 bit Vista system, otherwise it's been pretty good.

What are the opinions out there.....it the new version worth the upgrade? I know it has more features, but is it more stable, faster, etc? Are there any new 'bugs' that I should consider before upgrading and maybe need to wait for a fix?

Thanks for the valued input.

I think it is well worth the upgrade, but read through some of the threads. People have been reporting some problem with 64-bit. 32-bit seems to be very solid and much more powerful than PD8. Things work a little differently than PD8, but once you get used to the changes you can do a lot more with it. __________________________________

Some of my favorites:

1. Titles can be placed on ANY track and ANY of the 150 transitions can be applied inbetween Titles. This is pretty cool.
2. I like having all the video tracks be the same as opposed to One main track and adding PIP tracks.
3. I like having the Preview screen with better quality. It can be set to High Definition...that is a plus to me.
4. For me I find that keyframing is better....it doesn't work on everything just right yet....but once it is corrected...if it is corrected it will be much better. Just don't shorten a clip with key frames...right Carsen? Where did that key frame go?
5. For me the 64-bit version seems to work pretty well. Crossing my fingers and toes. I can get it to use more of my RAM if it has to. So having 64-bit is a plus for me.
6. Here is a page with lots of PD9 tutorials that are based on what is different and new.
http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/tutorial/

I would suggest trying the Free Trial for 30 days and see if you like it...See how it works with your video that you usually use.

Just some thoughts,

Kevin

The program has much more possibilities, but it also has much more problems.

I have read your other thread and you are not alone in having problems. However, PD9 has run virtually without a single crash on my average PC for over 6 months now.

The forum generally gives a slightly warped view of the number of problems as those happily using PD9 do not post lots of "I am having no problems with PD9 can somebody please not help me" Panasonic SD9, Panasonic TM700, Panasonic SD600, GoPro HD Hero.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like there are a few problems out there, from what I see on the forum. So, my next question is.....is Cyberlink recognizing these problems and proving prompt fixes?

If Cyberlink is being responsive, I'm comfortable with upgrading. If they are ignoring the issues, I'll stick with PD 8.

Thanks again.

There are quite a few reported issues, but I think it depends on what you do with PD. I am using it and it works great...I am aware of the issues that affect me and work around them when I can...I can still use it and I finishes producing a wedding video that I have produced to Blu-Ray...DVD...and uploaded all the chapters to YouTube. So it does work...it isn't like it is a terrible application full of bugs...But that is just my opinion...one of many. Everyone has a different outlook on the software.

Mine is pretty positive...but if using SVRT is a big "I gotta have it"...then it isn't for you.

As far as patches...it is pretty slow....not nearly as fast as I thought it would be. We beta tested it all Summer and reported many problems...some have been fixed, while others have not. I don't think the fixes come fast enough...but that's just my opinion.

Good Luck in whatever you decide to do. The forum is always here to help!

Hi,
I have PD8 and also interested in what PD9 can do before I upgrade.
My 'gotta have' is output movies (to a format) at 1080p 60fps. Do you know if this option is available?

Appreciate any advice/info.

Thanks,

Kiam

I have never tested this Custom profile. But I attached a screenshot of a custom profile that is what you asked for and you can easily setup when producing to a h.264 AVC video file. You could always download the trial and verify that it works for you.

Hi,

I am using the Sanyo FH1. It is the cheapest 60fps camera (to my knowledge). Only thing is the camera is NTSC only. Video format is MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 (.MP4). This format is easlily accepted in PD.
Takes beautiful videos at the highest setting. I just have not had good results with PD8 as it only supports 30fps. Some artifacts are seen during output process. I had far better results (like original and keeps the 1080p 60fps) with a freeware that only joins clips with limited editing. Since I require more than simple editing, the freeware is insuficient.

thanks,

Kiam

You can adjust the 1080p60 preset Kevin outlined above and increase the maximum bitrate to match the original footage by following these instructions:

http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/14176.page#67582

I have even got SVRT to work, well above the allowable maximum bitrate in the presets.

Hi AugieDog

I'll throw my 2 cents in.

Should you upgrade from PD8 to PD9?

My answer would be (I've used most versions of PD) just wait until the next patch or two is released before you buy.

PD9 offers alot of really great features but at the moment - it shouldn't be long as they have released 3 patches in a couple of months - wait a while or you could be disappointed.

Hi,

An update on my trial of PD9. Conversion from 60fps to 30fps is smoother than PD8. No more blotchy artefacts. That's a plus. mpg conversion from mp4 is still bad and unusable.

But what I am after - 1080p 60fps is still not working. Kevin, your suggestion on custom profile is great and after setting them, the final output is still 30fps (or 29.97). I tried 60 and 59.94 but converts to 30 and 29.97 respectively. I tried various formats, mt2s, mp4 etc but still the same. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Kiam

It sounds like something else that isn't working properly. I don't use that particular frame rate , so I was only sharing what was available in the sttings of a Custom Profile.

Maybe Dafydd can add to this or someone else who uses that specific frame rate.
