PD9 only captures 5 seconds of DV
[Post New]
Hi,

I'm having an issue trying to capture DV video from a Sony DCR-TRV350 cam corder using a firewire cable. I can only get 5 seconds captured before the capture ends. If I change the capture setting DV parametes to "Stop capturing automatically when there is a long blank interval on the tape" to 60 seconds, then I can capture 60 seconds. This seems like incorrect behavior for this setting. If I set it higher, things go south and the capture is garbage.

Using Windows 7.

Any thoughts?

Hi8? Is not supported in PD - hasn't been for 3 versions.

Use a capture device such as Kworld.

Another option for capture would be to use Windows Live Movie Maker (free) and then edit the .avi clips in PD. Redwing Roger

hi, Nhoj.
happy new year.
i have sony dcr-trv740. like you i transfer Di8 using the firewire.
what i've found out is what Dafydd said. it will not capture Hi8 videos; however, it'll capture Di8 videos. as you know our camcorders will play Hi8 tapes.

i have panasonic DMR-E85H, DMR-EZ475, and Toshiba RD-XS35 DvD recorder player. i transfer Hi8 tape using S-video, if you don't have then you can use RCA connectors. after that you can transfer to pd v9 through your computer's DvD recorder player.
i've transferred all my home movies that was recorded in Beta, Super Beta, VHS, S-VHS, Hi8, and Di8. yes over 40 years of analog videos into digital.

pd v9 puts those videos some spices and zing! also transforms to HD & Blu-Ray; however, don't expect too much for it is Garbage In Garbage Out...

hope this helps and put some hope in your endeavours.

Pepsi,

I can't capture mini dv in PD9 ultra trial version. I have a Panasonic dv player - (AG dv100) and camcorder - Panasonic -(AG dvc15).

In reading this thread, something like Windows Live Movie Maker will capture - then I send to PD9 for editing?

I have Windows XP service pack 3
64 bit Anthlon processor
Nvidia card

hello, again.

yes, always think outside the box. you may try it and i found out i didn't like it. the .avi file sucked. so i went with what i had. connect my Di8 trv-740 to panasonic ez-475 using either s-video cable or DV in(firewire) and created 720x480i DvD video. put the disc into my comp and pd v9 took over, put some spice and zip into my video and now you know the rest of the story...
using the pd v9, you can convert the 4:3 SD to 16:9 HD using the True Theatre Technology, too.

the new patch 2504 corrected .MPG / .MPEG files audio and i'm once-more a happy camper. no problems with my setup.
hope everything work out for you. remember, pd v9 is new baby so it has more growing pain than pd v8.

cya.

So would you recommend PD8 for a starter, then go to PD9 once the bugs are better tweaked?

Importing video to edit is of course a big deal to most. I believe my computer /firewire wouldn't have any problem here. This should be quite simple and is a big decision maker in purchasing.

Thanks for the info on the MPEG/MOV. At least that puzzle is solved.

Also, I went to Kworld site.

There are tons of downloads. For this issue, which is the right one?

hey, luv.
i went to panny and downloaded a manual and you got an excellent camcorder.
i'm a cheap.
going from pd v8 to pd v9 upgrade costs...
i can't recommend doing that cause i don't have same camcorder as yours. i don't know it'll work.

my Di8 trv-740 camcorder is same or older than yours. pd v8/9 only recognizes digital videos. when i try to record analog Hi8 like Nhoj, then it shuts down with few minutes of unuseable video... i have a mobo that has a firewire connector.
if you go to the panasonic web site and look at my DMR-EZ475V then you'll see it doesn't require all those kworld adapters and drivers. yup, kworld sells adapters, there isn't any freebees on that site except drivers.

if you're willing to spend money then get a stand alone dvd recorder with DV IN/OUT. your problem is over and out, period!
kick it back if you have any more ?s.

I'll check the stand alone DVD recorder - and I do appreciate your info.

I guess I expected the capture function to easily import my dv footage right into PD9. But I can't get any reading in my computer to just see footage when I hook to camcorder or dv player.

So to be clear, you have to transition dv footage to a dvd, then send to PD9, in order to edit?

yes. for now. until pd v9 comes out with another update on the equipment.

my sony Di8 dcr-trv740 is recognized by the pd v9 thru the DV or firewire connector only with digital signal!
with stand alone dvd recorder/player you don't need it. it is also true if the pd v9 recognizes your dv cam you don't need stand alone...

if you're my neighbor, it's easy to show you; however, we're not...
good luck.

I just tried using Windows Movie Maker as Redwing Roger suggested. Nothing there either.

There must be something missing in my computer to make this happen.

I have Windows XP Home, SP3, Nvidia nforce 430/410, AMD 64processor 3500+

DVD recorder a bit costly and I'll lose some resolution. Any other thoughts appreciated.

okay, what kind of mobo?
with your mini dv cam connected to the dv in or firewire, turn on the cam and what happens? does your comp try to find the driver for the mini dv cam?
does your os recognize panny's mini dv cam???

Mobo?

Well, that's just it. In PD9 only the mic and avchd will light up in the capture window. No picture, but wave editor will try to pick up audio. That's it.

In Movie Maker, I click on capture and I get "no capture device recognized."

this is what i have when i connect sony's dcr-trv740 Di8 camcorder that uses Hi8 tapes.
right corner the cam shows up as scanners and cameras.

if you don't see it on yours then your issue is mini dv cam to motherboard connection!

motherboard info comes up during POST.
microsoft says there isn't MS-DOS in wXP & w2k but it sure doesn't look it!
anyway.
how's it(your mini dv cam) connect to your motherboard? your mini dv cam has to be in VCR Mode, Power ON.
did you see my cam in the attached pic?

Yeah, Pepsi it must be a mobo issue.

I saw your pic (thanks) and nothing like that shows up. Unless there's a quick fix I'll have my computer guy ck. it out.

hey luv,
you might have to get a firewire adapter card from tigerdirect or newegg if you have spare PCI slot.
it's Plug & Pray it works. while at it check it out on your friend's computer that has the DV In or firewire.
all you have to is connect and turn it on and he doesn't have to have pd v8 or v9 installed!

goodluck.
