happy new year.
lerxst01. magnavox you ordered will work provided you have s-video or rca cables. s-video is little bit better.
for your compact vhs, you'll need a vhs adapter.
i have panasonic dmr-ez47v with dv input and s-video. it does the same as magnavox and i've transfered my Beta, Super Beta, VHS, S-VHS, Hi8 and Di8 to DvD before i used pd v8. and remember what Baryddth said. it's Garbage In Garbage Out. generally save the signal at the fastest speed if you can. SP is 2 hours and XP is 1 hour. don't recommend either LP or EP for your VHS back up to DvD.
analog to digital conversion isn't what you expect so don't get disappointed. look at the bright side. after the conversion, you've saved your precious memory. some of my Beta, Super Beta, VHS, S-VHS, Hi8 and even Di8 tapes are getting bad and can not view anymore... it's a bad side having the magnetic tape. tape dries, stretches and looses tracking ability.
good luck.
