Canon AVCHD files : problem importing and capturing

PowerDirector 9 Build 9.0.0.2330 [30 day trial version]

Windows Vista Business
Intel(r) Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
4 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GX2 - latest drivers installed

Camera:
CANON Legra HFR16
Output files: AVCHD

PROBLEM:
I am trying PD9 but the software cannot read the AVCHD (MP4) files on my Canon video camera. In 'Capture' page I get the following:

Loading contents
Unable to load content from specified folder/disc. Cyberlink PowerDirector does not support any content in the folder/disc.

I can download the video files to my PC to edit, but when the media is imported into PD9 the files show up as MP4 music files (used the music notes icon) and these cannot be played or accepted in the time-lines for editing.

NB these AVCHD files can read and edited in the free software that came with the camera, ImageMixer 3, and my previous video editing software, Roxio Creator 2009.

Any ideas to resolve this would be appreciated...

Paul,
Please can you attach a 5 to 10 second sample from your camera (unedited)? I or other members will test the clip in out systems.

I also would like to know more about your system please - see the 3 basics below.

My guess is you don't have the right codec's on your system, however a sample would help a great deal.

Dafydd

Hi Paul,

Unless I am totally misunderstanding what you are trying to do. why are even using Capture if you simply want to import the video files into the PD Library to edit in the Timeline.

Simply drag and drop the files from your computer into the Library. I have two Canon cameras and have never had a problem with PD7, 8 or 9.

Hi Dafydd & George, thanks for your prompt responses.

George - the point is that neither, capture, import nor drag and drop work. It was just to say that all avenues have been tried.

Dafydd - I will try and get you more info:

Will post the rest you want shortly,

thanks!

Hi Paul,

I downloaded the dec17-1000015.mpg file 19,492 kb and as you state when inserted into PD Library it shows a Music Icon which will not play. However it is just not PD9 as when I tried to open in Windows Media Player the same. I also tried Windows Movie Maker and and it will play with only a black screen and no sound. When the file is viewed in Media Info as far as I can tell it shows OK as a MPG video file, so I am not sure what your problem is as it is just not associated with PD9 as far as I can determine.

Perhaps someone else can give you some better information.

George

Hi George,
Mixed results on what I tested on. PD9 no, another yes with a but, so as you say it isn't all PD9 and that's what I informed CL.

Thank you for the additional tests, I hadn't checked those other software.

I would call the results "interesting"

Might be "interesting" for us but a PITA for poor PaulSmith_21

Just goes to show (again) how disorganised the consumer HD market is Panasonic SD9, Panasonic TM700, Panasonic SD600, GoPro HD Hero.

Paul;
Your video drivers are very old. TOO OLD! (9/17/2007--- and AVCHD didn't REALLY exist in 2007). This will cause many issues and may contribute to those you mention. I also suggest that you update the SOUND drivers.

Please download the updated video drivers from Nvidia and install them, then test again. I bet you will be pleased (although this particular file seems to be part of the issue)!!

Thanks for all the responses so far.

I have updated the video drivers. The sound drivers according to SigmaTel are up to date even if dated 2007.

The result is the same. The AVCHD video files cannot be read by PD9 - as in fact Dafydd found out on his system.

As these files can be read by ImageMixer 3, the free software that came with the Canon camera and my previous video editing software, Roxio Creator 2009, regrettably I tend to think that this is a PD problem.

Additionally, I confirm that these video files do not run on my Windows media player, nor realPlayer ver 10.5, nor Apple Quicktime, but do on Roxio's media player.

I will check out some Canon support forums to see what the have to say...

Are the files .mts ?
I am about to load up pd9 Trial myself and edit AVCHD from a canon vixia,
I'm not sure what your camera version is like,

I know my camera has different modes,
MXP 24MBPS Highest setting (says I cannot create AVCHD Discs in this format)
FXP 17MBPS (2nd highest setting)
and, XP+, SP, LP

Also I wonder if you are using less then a Class 4 SD Card,
Not sure if this affect it, but I have heard to Class 4 and above as the speed will not work.

Anyway, I am not a pro, just a beginer really, hope it helps. EVGA X99 FTW

Hi

Beyond importing, what's even more frustrating is the fact that PD9 (patched) fails to deal with Canon AVCHD (from Vixia HF200 for example) when SVRT3 is enabled. It fails to process the streams natively w/o transcoding after the the timeline hits the first transition.

I have reported this issue with PD8 about a year ago as well, it has been fixed in the meantime for PD8. And finally we are in the same situation with PD9 again.

Issue reported in the form of a support ticket enquiry, fingers crossed.
