Plug it in via the Firewire port. Turn the camera on. Go to the Capture mode in PD. Make sure the camcorder is set to play/VCR or whatever Sony calls it. That should do it.

Is this a tape drive camera? If it uses a memory card you really don't have to capture it. __________________________________

Hi John,

That's a very old camera you have there, not sure that PowerDirector can import Hi8 video directly, I think you should contact Technical Support for advice. There maybe other members who can offer a workaround solution for you.

I have a new problem with PowerDirector 8.
I connected the camcorder to my computer with a Firewire cable as Jaime sugested, and that worked, the camera was recognized. BUT when I try to capture my video film and click on RECORD, the program starts the recording but stops recording after about 5 seconds. What can that be ?? I tried to set the TIME LIMIT to 59 minutes, but that doesn't do the trick !

If you'd have used Search on this forum you will have found your issue has been answered previously a good number of times.

1. Hi-8 cameras are NOT supported since PD7 with firewire control.
2. Buy a USB analogue connection device (KWorld USB) and use that.

Dafydd

NOTE: Your subject heading does NOT relate to the content of this thread. In future please ensure you title a topic clearly so it relates to the actual issue you have. By doing so it helps members who use search later and for those who provide assistance. I have edited the subject title to: Hi-8 camera - capturing issue.

Hi Dafydd,

I tried to use the ION Video 2 Go USB device, that's by the way how I also got PowerDirector 8. PowerDirector was included in the package. But with the ION Video 2 Go my camcorder is not recognized, I think that the ION device is comparable with the KWORLD USB device ! That's why I tried the Firewire cable. Sorry, but I looked in search, but could not find the right answer, Maybe did not look good enough, sorry again !
I already sent a question about the matter to the ION help desk, maybe they know how to overcome the problem and if not, I'm have to use PowerProducer, this APPS does work with my ION device, but with less possibilities !

Interesting. I thought that was the purpose of the whole firewire standard is that anything fed over firewire would be treated the same by the computer. Always learning something new on here. __________________________________

John, I think you could probably capture the footage off your Hi8 video camera by using Windows Movie Maker, which is a free program. I use it to capture old analog footage. You don't hear any sound when capturing so you can't use any audio cues as to your in and out points. Also, in my case, the beginning of each captured clip has some video noise that has to be edited out but it's only a couple of seconds. Once you have captured your content, you can edit these clips using PD 8. Redwing Roger

I use Exsate DV Capture Live when PD won't seem to work for me. All it does is capture, but that really all you need at this point. __________________________________

Jaime-esque, the Exsate DV Capture Live program sounds like a good option for capturing DV. One question, when using it, are you able to hear audio during the capture? Not being able to hear audio when using Windows Live Movie Maker to capture is a limitation. Thanks. Redwing Roger

I used Exsate a few years ago, but suffered from a lot of frame drops, that was the free version. Jaime, which are you using?
Oh, Windows Movie Maker is, as of now, the best option, and you won't waste hours upon hours. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)
Nvidia GTX 960(4GB)/16GB DDR3/
Canon Vixia HV30/HF-M40/HF-M41/HF-G20/Olympus E-PL5.
Tape capture using 6 VCR, TBC-1000, Elite BVP4+, Sony D8 camcorder with TBC.

Hi All

With my Sony Hi8 film footage I 'plugged' the camera into my DVD recorder and copied the footage to DVD and then saved the DVD content to my laptop hard drive and imported those files into PD and produced it as a DVD HQ MPEG2 and then re-imported the MPEG file and worked on that.

Good luck Happing editing

Best Regards

Neil

Free. I didn't even know there is a paid version. I don't remember if there is sound during capture. I guess it never mattered to me, so I didn't notice.

I have tried Movie Maker and didn't really like the quality, but that has been a few years. Things may have changed. __________________________________

Jaime, it was a long time ago, and I must be confusing it with their editor, just noticed it does not look to work with Vista or 7. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)
