resizing (not moving) particle object

I hope this is a good place to ask. Am new to PD in general. running pd9 ultra now. I was wondering if it is possible to resize a particle object to part of the screen. Maybe an example which simplistically explains what i mean;
imagine a video with someone holding out their hand. could I resize for example the STARS particle object to appear only on the hand?

(Hope this makes sense)
If this isn ot the place to aks then my apologies and kindly redirect me please.

Ooh, ooh! I know this one!

Double-click on the particle object (or select it and hit the "Modfy" button that will appear above the timeline), and a particle designer room will open up. You can do all kinds of things in there, including moving any particular particle generator around.

Your best bet is to start with a test project and experiment. Jerry Schwartz

yes, i found the modify thingy but it doesnt do what I want. I guess the best way I can describe it would be if the particle effect had 'grab handles' so I could simply scale the whole effect and limit it to a part of the screen. the modify and designer screens do not seem to allow me to do this ?
But then i might be missing something ?

There are handles for each of the particle generators, but not for the whole effect. If there are three generators in an effect, you have to manipulate each one individually.

It might sound like a pain, but it actually gives you more control.

Here's an example of what I did by fiddling with the particle generators. The top picture uses Fire 100 as shipped; the bottom is how I modified it for my purposes.

there are controls to modify different elements of a Particle effect that you might use.

As an example:

1. Drag the 01_Star Particle effect to Track #1
2. Select(One left click) the effect on the timeline.
3. Select the MODIFY button above the timeline. The Particle Designer menu now appears.
4. Select (Highlight) the Star 2 in the Select Object list.
5. Select the fourth button from the left at the top of this menu (This is the Modify Selected Object Button).
6. If you want this Star 2 particle to be stationary on the screen for example....currently it has a Motion Path associated with it and it flies across the screen from Right to left. To change it....select the button(looks like a Star shape with a curvy line) This is the Modify Object path button.
7. Select the Big Green X....this will cause the particle to remain stationary.
8. Now select the Modify Particles Properties button.
9. Now you will see Four choices to modify this particle:
Emit Method....Particle Style.....Add/Delete Particle....and Modify Parameters.

Select Modify Parameters - See Screenshot. Here is where you can make lots of adjustments Emit Rate...Max count....Life...Life Variation...Size...Size variation....Speed....Speed Variation....Wave....Wave Variation...Rotation Speed....Gravity....That was quite few choices. Experiment with these controls to see what each one will do to this particle. You should be able to get the effect you are looking for....

You can then create your own or use this one......my only tip as you are experimenting with this particle effect is that you will want to delete the Background Image in this effect so that when you place it in the hand in your video you will actually be able to see it. You will also want to delete the Star 1 and Firework object to keep it focused on the single particle effect.

Here is a screen shot of what it might look like.

If you need any other help with this...please ask...I would be happy to help!

Regards,

Kevin
