Installing PD8

Hi all. I'm a brand new member. I am waiting for Amazon to deliver PD8 Ultra. I will be installing it on an i7 quad system, Wy 64 bit with 4 gigs of ram. I build my own systems. There will be several video sources, the main one being a new camera I bought for my son's birthday, a Panasonic Lumix that uses, what is it, the HDAVC format, .MTS. Hence, the Utra version vs. the Deluxe

I used an earlier version of PD that came as part of a Tutrle Beach PCI Video card. Generally it worked well and was intuitive. This was about 5 years ago.

So I will be installing this from a CD or DVD. I see that they have an update for the program.

Here's my question: anything special i should know about the installation process? I've looked at a couple fo threads here where there wee some installation problems and there have been some questions re. Qucktime. I'm not sure what that is about. In any case, any pointers on installation (if needed) would be appreciated.

Thanks all. This looks to be a really good forum. Take care.

BTW, what's up with the date system. I've always done month/day/year. Here it's day/month/year. Is this Canadian or something?

Yes, close all other applications, virus software, antispyware. You don't have to uninstall them just turn them off while running. Check your task manager to see if anything might still be running that could interfere. I would suggest installing the latest Quicktime prior to installation, that way you have the correct version and don't have to install an old version first.

The install prep might tell you to do other stuff following it exactly. I'm on Win7 64bit.

Other lessons to prepare yourself for. Read the forum and learn from others. The biggest challenge is learning the limitations and how to work around them. As much as I like the software for what it can do, I do feel constrained at times, but believe me not as constrained as I did with most other video editing software. There are limits you don't find until you try like no more than 4 motion videos per menu for HD output and no text only menus for example. 4x3 effects won't work with 16x9 video or vice versa. Learn how to organize your files up front so you reduce the chance that your links will break when changing drive letters moving stuff around. There is a packaging feature if you have the space but doesn't include the music. Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

KenR, thank you for your reply. Yes, I always make sure all programs are shut down before installing anything, but thansk for he reminder. Also, the heads up on getting the most current Quicktime. That's good to know.

I tried Adobe Premier Elements 5 a few years back. I've always like Photoshop Elements, and they came in a package. I could never ever figure it out. Premiere Elements was the most daunting and frustrating software I have ever used. I went back to my old PowerDirector. At least I could run it.

We won't be doing anything super-fancy here, though my son seems to have an interest in photography and video, and this seems like a great program and one with which he could grown. And I'm looking forward to it as well. I figure we will start out with basic stuff and go from there.

Again, thanks for the response and the guidance. Very helpful.
