Audio distortion when capturing from VCR

When I capture a video from a VCR the input audio level is too high causing the DVD audio to be distorted. How do I adjust this? I am using Realtek AC97 audio with sterio mix. If I adjust the input level in settings when I close that popup it goes back to the high setting. The mixer settings have no effect.

The product support answer is: n response to your issue I would like to inform you that there is no such settings to lower down the audio while capturing in PowerDirector software.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I had no problems with version 5
