Playback screen goes blank when I hit play

I just started editing a memorial video, which I've made many over the years, but something is amiss.

I just discovered that everything appears fine, but after I added a title screen I hit play to see how things were looking.
It surprised me that the play back window then goes blank! I'm in a real crunch on time and can't for the life of me
figure out what is wrong.
I attached a couple of screenshots.

Try this: Go to Preferences/Hardware acceleration and uncheck Enable hardware decoding and click OK.
