600MB video makes a 4 GIG DVD

Could someone please explain this to me.
I add one 600 MB video to a DVD. When I go to create disk and put a menu on it, I have a 4,000 MB DVD to burn!!!
A 144 MB video gives me a 1 GIG DVD.

If I go from smart fit to LP, it still just over doubles the size.

These files are already mpg2 files that play fine on a dvd.

Please can you attach a screenshot or two of the Edit interface (the working area where you edit video, media library and preview player).

Thanks

Capture 3 shows that I have it on LP.
1 Vid is one video with the size about double the video size.
3 Vid is 3 videos with the size about double all three of them.

I have tried this with 14 different videos, and get the same results every time.

These videos are all "DVD" MPG2 formats.
How can I get it to just leave them alone and put them on there. My guess is that it is trying to upconvert them.

I do appreciate the response too!

It may be producing them to a higher bitrate than the original. I don't have any mpeg2 on my computer to test that out right now. __________________________________

Hi Throw?,
Thank you for the attached images. Useful details. I wanted to see the data in the Edit interface - I was interested in the timeline content. I'd also like to expand upon Jaime's point by asking you to provide information of the files you are using.

Please use a software called MediaInfo to extract full information on the mpeg files you have. http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

MediaInfo and many other editor Extras are available from http://seemyworldonvideo.com/pages/extras-news-items.html . You'll need to join, free membership.

I know that this isn't a common thing to do (to drastically cut vid quality), but my major concern is that there is no option in Create Disc that will just leave my video alone. As I said earlier, I believe that it is trying to upconvert my video because it is so low quality.
I would think that there should always be an option to leave a video as is when creating a disc. There are people out there (maybe I am not even one of them) that know what they want, and PD should leave those people alone and not second guess and forcibly change their work. If this is what is happening, this would be a great case of software making things "too easy." Everything shouldn't be wizards and the like.

I will be gone for a few days, but look forward to hearing your response(s).
Again, I appreciate the help.

The second video is more in line with what I would expect for a DVD. If you are burning as a DVD video, then that is the standard format. If you are just burning a MPEG 2 video file as a data disc, then there are options to use a smaller format. __________________________________

Hi Throw -

I think I must have missed half the discussion... but some observations about the information

What is the source of the "original ripped file"?

It's 720x480 with a nominal BR of 8840 Kbps - as Jaime says, like DVD configuration

Your converted/compressed file is 320x240 with a nominal BR of 2000Kbps - hence the file size difference.

Could you please remind me what the problem is/was? Something's missing.

Cheers - Tony

The second video is the video that I ripped from the original DVD. It is the source.

The first video is the compressed very low quality video that I want to put onto a DVD.

I know that it is low quality and do NOT want DVD quality. However, when I try to make a DVD, then it doubles the size of all of my videos.

The problem is that PD decides I do not want what I said I want and is upconverting (this is the part that I am assuming) the videos.

Below is the data for the double sized output video.
The only things that stand out to me are the Bits/Pixel*Frame are tripled and the Bit rate is doubled.
This leads me conclude that it is forcefully upconverting my video.

Format : MPEG-PS
File size : 1 024 MiB

Video
ID : 224 (0xE0)
Format : MPEG Video
Format version : Version 2
Format profile : Main@Main
Format settings, BVOP : Yes
Format settings, Matrix : Default
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 3 500 Kbps
Width : 352 pixels
Height : 240 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 4:3
Frame rate : 29.970 fps
Standard : NTSC
Color space : YUV
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Progressive
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 1.382

Audio
ID : 128 (0x80)
Format : AC-3
Format/Info : Audio Coding 3
Mode extension : CM (complete main)
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 256 Kbps
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Channel positions : Front: L R
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz

In Create Disc use SP Standard Quailty in the drop down box and you will get a average bitrate of 3400. Some DVD players have trouble when the bitrate is below 1500-2000.

I guess the good news is that at least there is a reason they did what they did.
The bad news is that I think there still should be an option to not mess with the video. You can add a warning if you want, but I still think that should be an option.

I was able to burn the videos on a couple other programs with the low quality. They worked on my dvd player.

If anyone does know of, or find a way to keep your videos untouched for disc creation, I would appreciate a response.

Also, thanks for all the help from everyone.
