Hi Nick,
We're all going to give you some try this or what about this answers as we're all guessing.
Robert has asked for a diagnostic file - that would help us all a great deal more than the info you've actually given. Part B below. Thanks.
Where is the source video material stored - the hard drive location and connection. Is it a USB?
Robert also asked what the video file you're attempting to edit is? My guess is that you've recorded at the highest capability of your camera - 1080. What is the format progressive or interlaced and was it 60 fps or 60 fields per second? If you can use it, try out MediaInfo to read your video file data and attach the text file it produces.
Kevin has eluded to the need to check your drivers for your card - sensible suggestion to take up. He's also asked a number of important questions to assist us to undo the puzzle.
I'm concerned about your PC spec which isn't good enough to edit 1080 footage as raw material and has to rely upon your PC producing ShadowFiles to edit. The ShadowFiles need to be produced before you start editing and this can take some time. I think you're stressing your PC beyond its capabilities with the video footage and the ask you're placing on it. To Edit 1080 you need a better PC - look up Kevin's:
