Hi Peter,
I can pinpoint one of your major problems.
"Btw, my specs are Core 2 Duo, 3.16 Ghz, 4GB ram, 8800GT 512MB video card, running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I am working with full HD MTS files from a Sony HD camera. "
Your computer is not powerful enough to cope with Full HD.
You've experienced crashing and such - that's when you're stressing your PC.
Please take a look at some of the cameras and cross reference the info to the spec of the editors PC's data as a guide to you.

You'll get significant improvement just by improving your graphics card.
I would also suggest you save your project using the File > Save Project as, option and do do
1. VERY regularly
2. To a NEW pds file each time
3. Save your pds' in named numerical order.
By saving you have a back up.
I suggest you clear your ram memory as high end HD editing is "ram hungry" and you do this by shutting PD down. This will help you with stability as well.
I'm offering you a work around to help your PC cope with the stress you are putting it under. I must point out, the fault lies with your set up more than the software itself in this instance.
