Hi, Mike!

There are plusses and minusses to any kind of licencing arrangement, and sure, it's likely that one would likely install the programme to the computer of a mamily member, or a friend. While putting, say PD14 on a friend's computer might be "pushing the envelope" a bit too far, I see nothing wrong in installing on say, a son's or daughter's computer, so long as it's kept within the family. But, all-in-all, these computer software licences are quite restrictive, and unnecessarily so in many cases. The high cost of the software means that with each sale, the company that developed the software, will quickly recoup the outlay in creating the software in the first place, so it should be "no skin off Cyberlink's nose" as to how it's used.

Your finishing remark: "As an aside I'd like to point out that on other forums I visit people are not criticised for posting to old threads provided the comments are still relevant to the thread title", I quite agree. The moderator shouldn't be too quick to lock a thread if there are still valid and pertinent comments yet to be added.
Hi All!

In previous times I've noticed when I've logged in to this forum, if I had to explain something to another poster, I opened my Power Director and went to the relevant feature, noting that I'm shown as not signed in to Director Zone. It has just this second occurred to me(a light-bulb moment!) that, after I got around the password situation to upload my costom transitions, I ticked the box to automatically log in to DZ. Ha! That's it! Now I get it, whenever I'm "on-line"(connected to the net) this auto log-in will occur. Generally when I'm editing video, I work off-line.

Cheers!

Neil.
Hello!

As the thread on "Multiple Computer Licence" has been locked, I open this thread simply to say I do strongly believe, that if and when a person purchases a computer product, like Cyberlink's Power Director, Power DVD or any other software programme, of any version, considering the cost to him/her of such purchase, then that person alone should be the final arbitur of whether he/she installs the programme on one or multiple computers. And he/she SHOULD NOT be required to buy extra copies/licences for the other computers on which the software is installed, so long as the one person owns those extra computers.

The licencing as it stands now is like saying "you can play this record on one player only and you are not permitted to use it on any other phono equipment you may own" The recording industry would've been "dead in the water" if they applied the type of licencing that Cyberlink and other software makers wish to impose on us end-users.

Something to think about!

Hallo, andreaspausr27!

Viel Gruss!

Hi, Anja.

By now you may have seen the two new transitions I've created and uploaded, Diagonal Wipe 1 & 2. They should prove useful to anyone who downloads them and they can be manipulated by the end user as well.

Cheers!

Neil.
Hi, again, All!

Okay, hyere's the story so far: I created two new transitions(basically twoversions of the same effect), I wanted to upload them. I was already signed in to Director Zone(and into Off-Topic Chat). As far as PD14 was concerned though, I hadn't signed in. I had expressed a wish that when logging in, one's password was fully visible to the user at his/her own end(on his/her monitor) but nowhere else, this measure to thwart "hackers". That now out of the way, I did get to upload my two transition effects, but first I had to change my password to something far more easily remembered by myself(taking a precaution of noting it down first before entering it into the system). That done, I signed in through the PD14 programme and successfully uploaded the two transition effects I created.

The effects themselves are "Diagonal Wipe 1" and "Diagonal Wipe 2". The first wipes from Top-Right to Bottom-Left while the second wipes from Top-Left to ottom-Right. They compliment the existing "Wipe Soft" transition effect but, should anyone choose to download them, they are manipulable by whomever does download them. So, if you do download either or both, and do make any alterations, please upload your new version for use by others.

Cheers!

Neil.
Hi all!

I've created two new, simple transitions, being diagonal wipes. Diagonal Wipe 1 goes from top-right to bottom-left while Diagonal Wipe 2 goes from Top-Left to bottom-right. I wanted to upload them but, even though I'm signed in here on the forum. I'm not signed in through the PD14 programme itself. I would like to see a facility where my password is visible to me on my own monitor, rather than just the set of dots which should be visible to anyone else trying to use my log-in for "hacking" purposes. This would allow me to sign in via the Power Director programme by logging in here, checking what my password is, then typing same into appropriate space on the PD sign-in window. It would make things a lot easier for us users.
Hi, Carl!

Yeah, fair enough, he should've got back to us and let us know how he got on. There'd be a few who are curious to know his results.

Cheers!

Neil.
Thanks Anja!

That gives me some ideas that I'll try out at some point soon. This is something I didn't(and still don't) have in PD8. I've retained PD8 because it allows me to author(burn) to DVD at DVD-SP quality to get the most out of available capacity of DVD discs. High image quality doesn't mean much to me if I can get just over an hour's worth of content onto the disc. But as for custom-created transitions... Yep! I'll definitely be creating some of my own, now I know how it's done!

Cheers!

Neil.
Hello!

I've noted with interest, the provision for creating a customised transition effect(not a variation of existing effects, but completely user-created) What type of image do I need to create such an effect? BMP, JPG, PNG..... What type?

I'd like to have a crack at creating a transition that, if successful, I could upload it so others may use it as well.

Cheers!

Neil
Hi, All!

It's not surprising that France abandoned their own SECAM colour system in favour of the vastly superior German-developed PAL system. The SECAM system could not cope with switching cameras(typical TV station newsroom setting: switch from newsreader to sports reporter or weather presenter, severe discolouration occurs) For that reason the TV stations equipped their studios in PAL system gear(cameras, videotape, telecine, control desks and othernecessary gear) and only transcoded to SECAM at the transmitter. Looks like they've given SECAM away completely by now. SECAM was, by far the worst system ever developed. That's why DVDs are encoded either in PAL or NTSC.

But that was not the point of my comment, as such. It was more to do with what type of disc, to which "TheCoder" was burning content. DVD-5(single layer 4.7Gb) is fine. Domestic DVD players will handle them without problems. DVD-9(dual layer 8.5Gb) however, is a different story. Computer DVD drives will handle them, domestic DVD players "spit the dummy" and will not play them at all. For me, I always use single layer discs, burned to DVD SP quality, so I can fit a little over two hours worth of content onto my discs, making full use of their capacity where possible.

Cheers!

Neil.
Hi, Mike & Carl!

My guess is that he's either sorted out his problem with his existing TV or splashed out and bought a new set.

Cheers!

Neil.
Hello, "TheCoder"!

It isn't whether you use NTSC or PAL-encoded discs that will be your problem. The "brick wall" you're about to slam headlong into will be the use of dual-layer(8.5 Gb DVD-9) discs. While computer DVD drives will happily play home-burn dual-layer discs, standalone DVD players will "spit the dummy" on any such disc where they'll happily play commercially-made dual-layer DVDs. This has been my experience with dual-layer discs, so much so that, when I do use them now, it's only to "archive" content if I don't want to keep it on a hard-drive. If you're intending your product to be available world-wide, you need to burn to the disc as MPEG-2 and have a deal with a company who can make commercial-like versions of your dual-layer DVD for public market. What's the difference, you ask? A home-burn DVD has a purplish-coloured playing surface while the commercial disc playing surface has a silver-coloured appearance.

Cheers!

Neil.
To all concerned!

Why is Cyberlink so greedy? Provided you, one individual, own two, three, four or more computers yourself, and all are used on the "net", then, by rights, as you have bought the licence and the software for Power Director(any version, but we'll concentrate for now on PD9 to 14), then it should be your choice, and yours alone, to install the particular version on any one or more, or all of the computers you own, AND YOU SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED TO HAVE A SEPARATE LICENCE/SOFTWARE PACKAGE FOR EACH! I recently purchased and installed PD14 Ultra and installed same(from retail boxed package) on my desktop computer, it sits alongside PD8 Ultra. If the opportunity should arise that I should acquire a laptop computer at some time in the future, I should be able to use the same installation disc to install PD14 Ultra to the laptop as I have used to install same to my desktop, and it should be my choice, and mine alone to do so, as it should with any user of Cyberlink software of any description, not just the various versions of Power Director.

Cheers!

Well done! You'll be able to finish your project now!
Hello Prof. Maliek!

Just watched one of your YT vids. It gives me an idea or two I might try out in the future, but the clip I produce first needs to be appropriate for the effect to have any meaning within it. Effects(any effects) shouldn't be added to a video just for the sake of adding effects. You need a reason to apply the effect you're going to use. For example, I make use of the "Video In Reverse" effect quite often in some of my videos(not all). A typical use might be a clip of one of my young nephews or nieces jumping or diving into a pool. I pick a point in the video just before the jump or dive, preferably at a point of an exact number of seconds(like, say, 1 minute 25 seconds, splitting at that point, then counting off 25 frames[at 25FPS] to the next full second, 1 minute, 26 seconds splitting at that point, then copy that one second into clipboard and paste it in(3, 5 or 7 times, never more than 7 though, let's not bore the viewer!) The reason for the odd number of times pasting in is that the forward motion at the start and end must mesh in with the action before and after the effect is applied. So, the resultant effect is, the child dives/jumps in-out-in-out-in... you can imagine how it looks on a screen. The reverse effect works well to bring a laugh to the viewer but is not always appropriate in every situation. I mean it lends itself well to some situations but not all.

Cheers for now!

Quote: Is there a provision for default settings which will give me that DVD SP option in PD14 Ultra so that I can burn 16:9 AR video at DVD SP in future?
Neil

Sadly no. It does sound like those options are only available in PD8 and 7. You have indicated that the quality is good for what you are doing. These are good reasons why users retain at least 1 previous version of PD. Each new version can have features removed and new features added as we all find out.

Maybe Cyberlink can add this back to PD15 as it can help users that still prefer this setting.

Hello, Tomasc!

Absolutely a must for Power Director 15! The ability to burn discs at DVD SP quality was/is a vital component of previous Power Director versions, particularly as it enabled the user to put upwards of 2 hours of content onto a disc(one could actually get up to 2 hours 25 minutes onto a typical 4.7Gb disc at DVD SP setting, and it's for that reason I have retained PD8 Ultra). Yes, the image quality is good for my purposes. I make DVDs to be played on domestic DVD players, mainly of home movies that I've made(family gatherings for Xmas or other events, New Year fireworks, Easter camping trips... the usual things!) And I like to fit them all on one disc rather than have to spread the content across two or three discs, that's where DVD SP burning really comes in handy.

Cheers!

Neil.
Hello, Anja!

Your remark, the internet isn't personal! How true! More's the pity. At least the discussions on these forum pages aren't going to raise suspicions within the intelligence(?)-gathering fraternity(intelligence?....er... yeah!) What we're discussing here is really quite inoccuous. But the internet is quite guilty in many respects of invading privacy, and usurping roles in commerce and trade(shopping on-line usurps the role of the "bricks-and-mortar" stores we like to visit to buy what we want). As for the use of music in video clips(what this thread is meant to be about), I avoid all the copyright hassles by simply NOT up;oading anything I've made which has music of any kind, or source, in its soundtrack.

Cheers!

Neil.
G'day Tony!

The question you asked Anja about Smartsound, I can give you my own personal answer there and it's this: I have really only used what's already available, and I make minimal use thereof. Often I don't use any music at all in my videos. Sometimes I use commercial music(usually instrumentals by The Shadows, The Tornados and other 1960s groups) and for that reason, my videos are DEFINITELY for private use only.

Another thing I've noted. I think I've worked out where you are, down on the NSW Central Coast. Anywhere between Tuggerah and the Hawkesbury River(that's a wide scope, ain't it?) No need to divulge exact locations though. Suffice to say where almost neighbours!(LOL).

Cheers!

Neil.
Hi, MarkZwijsen!

I think Mike(Fenman) may well be onto something there! If you have the operator's manual for your TV, read the relevant section(not sure under which heading it would fall) but dailing that, there is always that qualified service person.

Cheers!

Neil.
Hi Anja!

Funny how you say EU copyright laws are strict. I have some German-issue 45s and LPs, and on some of them is the bracketted portion of the German-language copyright warning re: copying to tape(Unerlaubte vervielfältigung = unallowed duplication) The bracketted portion reads "Ausser zum persönlichen Gebrauch" which translates in English as "Except for personal use". Mind you, this didn't appear on ALL Germal-issue records even from issue to issue on the same label, but I've seen it enough to know that the record companies were quitehappy for us to record our favourite songs onto a cassette, for our own use, of course! That was nice of them, wasn't it? As for music in our videos, if YouTube are going to kick up a stink any time someone submits a video where the camera picks up some background music coming of someone's radio, purely unintended, as it was, then it's not worth putting anything on YouTube at all.

Cheers!

Neil.
