So after a couple of months of relative stability, I'm trying to editing some 60fps clips slowed down 50% and PDR is just constantly falling over. No rhyme or reason as usual, I cut a bit, press play to view the clip and it just locks up again until windows tell me to close it. 40 plus times it's doen it now. I'm finding myself having to save after every adjustment which is just unworkable...
I've done this excercise a number of times using same camera, same files (bog standard MP4 @ 60 FPS) same computer...same everything, it's just now become buggy again.
Using a windows 11 laptop, I7 prosessor, lots of RAM etc...
Anyone any clues on how to get it to stay standing for more than 5 minutes?
Hey, thanks for the response. I didn't say the playback isn't smooth, it is once it gets going!
I don't really use LUTS but I did try with my old system and it totally locked up. I'm now working on a brand new high powered machine that plays LUTS in preview just fine and everything else. As I mainly edit underwater footage, the option of LUTS is something I'm enjoying exploring.
It's just this little bug that when I've been scrubbing through, cut, edited, put a title on or anything like that, it just freezes as described. Once I've done whatever it is, I go back in the timeline to review, I press play (either with the button or by pressing space bar - the issue is the same whatever) and nothing happens or the audio starts but not the video. If i stop it and start it again, works perfectly.
I'll record some examples of what I'm on about and post a link later on.
Cheers
Andy W
QuoteGenerally speaking, that sounds like your system isn't able to preview the timeline smoothly in real time. LUTs can do that, and you may want to hold off on applying them until the very last step. See this FAQ for other ideas.
Hey, just wanted to drop you a line to say this really helped. Thank you. Everything seems a lot more stable now!!
So, with that done, what's the deal with the programme locking up when I press the space bar to start playback from the timeline after I've been scrubbing through or cutting?
It either just doens't play at all (even though the play button disappears and is replaced by the pause button as if it's working) or the audio starts but the picture freezes. If I stop then start again, it sorts itself. Not a huge issue, but annoying.
I would probably uninstall PDR, run your system checks and updates - then re-install PDR.
Is this a first time installation of PDR or just the latest update? ie has PDR operated successfully before on the same machine, I note that previously you posted using a different laptop so is this a new rig?
I've uninstalled and run all the tests as you said and linked to in the posts. The first one said it had indeed found some errors and had fixed them, the second scan didn't find any issues. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the NVidia driver using the custom method as described. Just about to do a sweep to make sure eveything else is up to date then I'll re-install PDR and give it a whirl.
This is a new laptop. The old one was, well, old!! It couldn't handle LUTs at all and was just grinding to a halt.
I have had previous versions of PDR on this system, and to be honest, it's been much more buggy with all of them on this PC than the last, but the latest itteration was simply unuseable it crashed that much.
Anyway, I'm going to crack on as I need to get some editing done. Hopefully this has calmed things down a bit. I'll feedback either way.

Attached as requested. It's totally unusable at the moment. Totally unstable. Sometimes crashes as it opens, sometime I'm getting 10 minutes in and they for seaminly no reason, it just crashes when I'm scrubbing through. Really not great.
I've just noticed as well that when I open PDR, its taking a fair few seconds to load all the titles / PIP objects etc. I've just sat here for over a minute waiting to be able to access the text only titles as they didn't show until it seemed they'd downloaded from somewhere?!? Does everything have to download from somewhere else now?
Juat downloaded the latest version and it's crashing like crazy doing even simple stuff. Doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason, just locks up and doesn't repond. Windows eventually just asks to wait or shut down PDR, waiting does nothing so have to shut it down.
Anyone else having issues as it's doing my nut in!!

Any idea on when a fix is going to be available? I use this quite a lot for different projects and I'm still just getting some weird box come up when I try and launcht the programme.
QuoteWith a few more steps, this link show you how to enable the Nvidia GTX 1050 on the laptop for hardware encoding: https://youtu.be/44-AhHIHi8Y . Let us know if this works for your setup.
Hey,
I'd found the first video and had added PD.exe to the high power list, but I hadn't found the second. I have now done as the video instrcuted and put the power to Best Perfromance and added the GPU.exe file to the high power list too.
With all this done, I do actually see the Nvidia doing something at least now. It is being used to playback video in the edit module which is now much smoother than it used to be. However, when rendering, the CPU is still doing the heavy lifting and maxing out. However the GPU is now working at 30% which is better than the previous 0%, but still not great.
I'm really not sure if this is a PD issue or an Nvidia issue but it certainly doesn't inspire me to pay for a big graphics card again. I think money is better spent on getting a better CPU if that's the chip that's doing all the work even if it's not the best at the job.
I'm currently running PD on my HP latoptop which has an Nvidia GeForce GTX1050 graphics card installed. I bought this laptop becasue of the graphics card, but on looking, when I'm rendering video, the GPU sits idle while my CPU does all the lifting.
I have optomized PD in the settings section and I have added PD to the graphics settings as a high power only app which should use the 1050, but it doesn't when rendering. It only seems to come to life when I'm playing or previewing video when editing and then only uses about 15% of it's capacity.
Have I got this GPU thing round my neck and have i wasted a load of cash on something that simply doens't help with video editing with PD? Or is there some secret setting that will allow me to start making use of the power of the GPU?
So using PD 16 and want to emulate a fast time shift effect for an upcoming scuba dive video project. The effect I'm looking for will see the footage skip, but not miss any frames I think, in time to music.
Here is a link to a video with the same kind of effect in it - particularly where the girl is walking away from camera. The quick speed up and slow downs in time with the music are what I'd like to do.
Sorry, I can't agree at all. From my point of view the 360 stuff is of no interest. But the new colour correction features may really help those of us that shoot underwater shots especially and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do. I'm also looking forward to playing with the collage maker plugin as that is likely to come in useful for me too.
I must admit I didn't upgrade to 15 from 14 as there didn't seem much difference apart from the 360. I guess you really should read the guff before you blindly upgrade to see if it's worth it.
QuoteFor re-sizing, cropping, re-sampling etc I use IRFANVIEW, in batch mode if necessary so as long as the crop parameters are the same you can do 100's of images in one click. I've used this in the past with time-lapse photos to crop down to an area I wanted to highlight.
Hey Longedge,
I have downloaded IRFANVIEW and had a quick play, but I'm struggling to get it to make the pics 16:9.
Can you walk me through how to do it and how to do a batch please?
So, give me a clue then. How do I change the aspect ratio of all the pcitures? I have PD 14 and Photo director 7 I can use. I've had a quick play, but can't find anything obvious that says "change aspect ratio"!! It would have been nice.
Depending on the Theme Designer template you're using, the apsect ratio needed varies. Even within each segment of a theme, some photos/clips are displayed within frames & others are displayed either full screen or close to it. Some frames are 16:9 & others vary.
So - to avoid the black bars - you need to either:
crop all images to 16:9, so they match all circumstances, or
crop some images to 16:9, to match particular segments of the template you're using
I just threw some photos at the Wedding Album template. All the 16:9 photos were displayed without any black bars (though parts were sometimes masked by the frames). The photos that were 4:3 (or close to that AR) very often displayed with black bars.
It's not the "size" that's the issue - it's the aspect ratio.
So I'm trying to put together a video wedding album for someone using the theme designer. I am only using photo's.
When I put them into the designer, I'm getting a thick black bar either side of the picture, like they're not quite big enough. They seem pretty standard though and work in the standard editor full screem without stretching out.
Anyone any ideas about how I can deal with this without having to load each one into Paint.net and resizing them there?
I've been asked to produce a video editing course for scuba divers by the British Sub-Aqua Club of which I am a member. They would like me to supplement the day course with some online tutorials that can be accessed afterwards.
I've got the screen capture software and have been familiarising myself with it. I've seen a few tutorials on YouTube where the tutor zooms in on a particular part of the screen.
I can't seem to do that with the capture software, so am assuming this is done in editing afterwards using the crop / zoom function or am I missing something obvious?
