Thanks for the "enlightenment" I had no idea Microsoft Photos could do such a thing!
I've now explored it fairly thoroughly & it's quite amazing what it can do with video... trim, combine, slo-mo, draw on, add effects etc. I had no idea!
BUT - for your purposes of maintaining maximum quality - I wouldn't recommend it. A few things happened in my testing that make me say that... mainly to do with video bitrate.
1. Imported a .MOV clip from Canon 70D, 1920x1080/30p @ 87.3Mbps - trimmed it and saved a copy. There were no options for output quality. Resolution & frame rate were retained, but bitrate dropped to 27.8Mbps. MediaInfo attached.
2. The only output option is MP4, so you get AAC audio.
3. Used the "Create a video" feature to combine a number of clips (all from Canon 70D) & exported to the maximum quality (Large). The original video bitrates were all ~30Mbps. The rendered file from Photos dropped to 11.6Mbps. Side-by-side MediaInfo attached.
I only mentioned all that because your original question was: "Can I do that in power director without losing original file quality?"
Cheers - Tony
Hi Thanks Tony, for such a simple thing it is all so complex thanks for checking it out. Its amazing that there seems to be no software that allows clipping and keeping original file format integrity. Paddy
Even though you can't produce to a .MOV container in PDR, you can still retain (close to) the original quality in your rushes video.
The first thing to establish is the exact properties of the recorded videos. e.g. this is one clip from a 70D
Resolution: 1920x1080
Frame rate: 29.97fps
Video bitrate: 88.9Mbps
Format: AVC H.264 High@5.1 Audio: PCM @ 1536kb/s
So to match that as closely as possible, you could customise a profile. First go to Produce & click "Intelligent SVRT". PDR will suggest a profile. It'll probably be MP4. You could apply that profile (give it a custom name) & you'll be pretty close to original quality.
The downside of MP4 is you'll lose the PCM audio. To retain that, chosee AVC H.264 - either M2TS or MKV.
Best thing to do is give it a shot and see if you're happy with it.

Thanks Tony I will have a look at that. I just found that the windows photo app can do basic clips on original file format and keep its integrity. So that might work. Good to hear from you. Paddy
HI I have just shot some pretty amazing interviews with men around emotional wellbeing. I want to just clean the material up a bit, clip here and there to show some rushes of material. Can I do that in power director without losing original file quality?I shot the material with canon 70d in HD. .mov
If yes please explain how. If no what programme should I use? Thanks in anticipation. Paddy
There's no way to build that into a produced video that I know.
You could simply insert an image for a suitable duration to allow the viewer time to think... but that would be pre-determining the time required.
A variation of that would be to provide an instruction for the viewer to press the SPACE bar to pause the video and allow reflection time - then again when they're ready to move on.
Something like...

HI Tony, thanks for taking the time to do that, thats a very effective way of doing and possibly the only way, it seems. I did see that camtasia have a whole suite of interactive things that you can do, but you also need to use their cloud based streaming system as youtube wont work with it.
But keeping it simple and doing it well as you demonstrate works on youtube and my website. Good to make some progess. Paddy
I wish to make a tutorial video. I want the video to pause at the point where a question is posed, to give the student or participant time to do what is asked or write down the answer to the question and if possible to have a play button that can be pressed when they are ready to resume. There might be 10 of those in a video. Any ideas
I don't know if this is the problem but sometimes when that happens, unlinking the audio and video (right click) will allow the correct tool options to be available.
Worth a shot, anyway.

HI Tony, I will give that a go. That was mentioned in my googling, with comments that it did not work. But will give it a go and report back. Paddy
that sorted the problem, Tony, now just needed to be careful about trimming without re linking them. so thanks

Was editing a video today from my canon 70d. I ended up with a few sections ready to produce and decided that I wanted to do some zooming in, but the section I wanted to work on would not bring up the edit bar to use ie which would give me access to powertools key frame editor etc. The next section would but not the previous one. I did some googling on it and others seem to have the same problem but there does not seem to be a fix.
QuoteIf I understand correctly what you want to do, then I think the easiest way would be to leave your existing video/audio timeline as they are and simply place your stills in a layer over the top of your video. If you make sure that your still images are the correct aspect ratio then they will fill the screen.
You understand correctly and what you suggest seems to be the most elegant solution and efficient, thanks a lot for taking the time to reply. Paddy
I am doing a video shoot, with audio of me explaining my service, wisdom stone life journey guide. I want to be able to insert some stills into the video to replace segments of the video but keep the audio. Can anyone point me towards resources on that? I am sure its simple. Paddy
QuoteAppend number1 to the filename and increase that number by 1 each time you do a save as on the project. Say pds file 50 don’t work. You can then use 49. You no longer have to rely on one pds file. You have many to choose from.
I produced a final rendered version of my edit of a project, I could no longer find an editable copy of that draft edit to work on. maybe it was there but I could not find it. Can some one please advise me of the best protocol for saving the project edit so not to loose it if a produced and rendered. Thanks for any time you spend on that. Paddy
I Like Malik with his good way for beginners. So 1 Screen you have the Tutorial and the 2.One you have PD15
Good luk
Thanks Paul, cant run two screens on one computer, but I can run two laptops so get the two screen learn thing. I got a reply from another guy in oz, who does free you tube tutorials he is up for some mentoring by skype, at a fee. That will help for those issues that I just dont seem to get, not matter how many times I look at video tutorials. each tutor just takes so many things for granted, and dont seem to know they do it. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Paddy
Hi hope this is appropriate. I am a 71 yr old guy in Tasmania Australia. I am committed to learning video making and editing with pd15. Getting there but its a struggle. Is there anyone here maybe fromaustralia that would be ok to act as a mentor for me in fielding some questions on difficult learning issues as i go along. Comfortable with skype, email or ph. Paddy
