QuoteCould be several reasons perhaps.
1) If you are in "Movie" mode, TV Safe Zone lines won't appear. They only appear in "Clip" mode.
2) If you are using "Titles" and have the title selected that's overlayed on a video/pic, TV Safe Zone lines won't appear
3) Item 2 also applies to Fx added
If none of those are correct, maybe post a pic of your entire screen when the TV Safe Zone lines are missing for other possible clues.
Jeff
Thanks Jeff, you have hit the nail on the head

Will need to work around that

re-editing an old video
Splitting the timeline at the chapter markers and finding that some of the clips have the tv safe and gridlines greyed out.
Have been inserting a graphic at the start of the problem clip, this may be the trigger but I can,t figure out why.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks tomasc,
Will investigate your suggestions and reply in due course with how I go

Hi tomasc,
Not ignoring your suggestion, have got that on my itinery.
In the meantime spent a bit of time on Google and found I had to setup my network properly to share files and allow streaming.
I can now access my media directly on the PC rather than the Samsug, easier to use my folders.
Thanks again.
Robert
I solved this problem ages ago by using a HTPC. Today you can buy a small cheap used laptop for <$100 to store DVD, BD, and AVCHD Disc folders. Menus and chapters work great with the folders or iso if you use the right media player. You can play more modern 1060/60p avchd 2.0 with PowerDvd. With Windows 7 or 10, you can cast any video to your TV wirelessly from any room.
You can also buy a better BD player that can play multiple AVCHD(HD resolution) folders from a usb stick. An external usb hard drive might work too but I haven’t tried it. Menu and chapters work on these. This is my preference today.
Thanks tomasc,

I hope that these comments might help others and perhaps elicit
suggestions for improvement.
No copyright issues – these are my own family and travel videos.
Applications like Powerdirector has made videoing accessible and a satisfying
hobby for amateurs such as myself.
Burning DVDs was always a bit of a pain, what with faulty discs and failed
burnings. With technology advancing, and odd discs starting to fail,
I decided to start transferring all my product to one HDD location
and play on my Samsung TV where the DVDs were normally played anyway.
The results to date are not entirely satisfactory.
The TV does not recognise iso files, so depending on backups available I
have to use mp4 backups or use PD and reauthor the VOB files.
On the DVD I might have 10 or more chapters which can be accessed by the
menu or skipping to the the desired location (quicker than using the
menu which can be quite klunky).
PD files do not seem to record the chapter markers, but using Handbrake
can achieve this.
However my remote control does not have a skip button.
Alternatively you can record each chapter as a separate file.
My problem here is that the TV cannot display the files in list mode,
only as icons which it neatly displays in 2 rows, odd on top and
evens below. This means you cannot have the files automatically display
sequentially, it plays the odds first then the evens.
Thanks Jeff
Coudn't figure out how to use Icaros
I think my problem is a Windows thing.
My project is a series of Chapters (20) produced as mkv files ultimately to play on a Samsung smart tv.
On file explorer most of the Intro thumbnails show ok.
But on a few of them Windows selects an image further into the video which spoils their purpose.
How or why does windows select these arbitary images rather than the initial one?
Regards, Robert
To clarify, this is part of a move to
using a portable HDD to view my old videos rather than DVDs of which
the odd ones are starting to fail. To be conveniently navigable I
have had to fiddle with filenames and thumbnails.
I got a solution to the errant
thumbnails by changing the starting jpg image to a custom title using
the jpg file.
Although I didn't have to try this solution,
anyone with thumbnails problems might look at this site.
Thanks Jeff

I have a jpg file to start the video which I want to be the thumbprint, for recognition purpose, but the thumbprint is locked on to a frame further on. Have tried splitting the video before the offending frame, and also grouping the jpg with the following clips, but can't get rid of the wrong picture.
Any suggestions appreciated

Thanks AVPlayVideo for your prompt suggestion.
I went away and put my thinking cap on (it often helps)
I went thru the timeline frame by frame at the problem point and coudn't find any gap.
So I re rendered the mp4 file as MKV and it now behaves.
The mp4 profile : MPEG-4 640x480/25p (6mps) Aust PAL
The MKV profile : AVC 720x480/24p(8ms)
I noticed in checking my timeline that my frames are 24 per second.
Maybe this was the weakness.
These files were originally from a digital tape camera.
I have produced a video in mp4 format.
The sound plays ok right through ok in PowerDirector365 edit mode.
The sound plays ok right through ok in mp4 on the PC.
When I copy the mp4 to an external portable backup HDD The sound plays ok right through on the PC.
When I play the mp4 on my Smart TV from the portable HDD the sound drops out on the final scene.
If I stop the play and restart it in the final scene the sound is there.
It seems there must be a break (which I can't find).
I have tried cutting a small piece from the previous and last scene but that hasn't worked.
I have tried re-rendering.
Perhaps the error correction on the PC is better than that on the TV ? But still need to find a solution.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks Optodata - mea culpa - did not update my profile - have just purchase PD17 ultra.
I had looked at a previous post of the same problem and tried the suggestions but no result.
Went to do a screen record and you guessed it, is working again.
When it plays up again will post a screen recording

RESOLVED:
re Multi Editor freezing :
Sometimes we just have to admit being a
bit dumb.
I had read a previous post with
similar problem and suggestions going back several years.
I obviously became confused and lost
the plot, however the solution was really quite simple.
When I wanted a selection starting at
the beginning of the clip, because the pointer was already bright I
neglected to fix it as IN point, then of course I couldn't proceed
past the 1st OUT point.
Hope this helps someone else from doing
the same thing.
QuoteI don't see any problems with MultiTrim at all. Please take a look at this very brief screen recording and see if you have trouble repeating the same kinds of steps:
You can also make a screen recording to show us what you're seeing.
The next steps would be to follow the steps in the Read Me Before Posting thread at the top of the PD17/365 forum, and attach the DxDiag test results along with a screenshot of PD's version screen (with all the icons).
Another thing to try is to upload a short sample clip to a cloud folder and paste the link to it here so other people here can test it and see if PD might be having some difficulty working with it.

I mark 1st in point, then 1st out point which remains dim.
Previously when I went to mark 2nd in point the 1st out point would fix and the 2nd in would become available.
But now the thing is locked and 1st out point remains dim.
I tried rebooting which a couple of times fixed it, but now does not change.
Reinstalled PD but still no good.
Have tried switching to single trim and back, and the reverse button but still no good.
Previous suggestions re this did not solve it.
Really would prefer not going back to basics on timeline as MultiTrim is quite handy if it works.
It seems to be acting as Single Trim.
Any suggestions appreciated.
QuoteIn my view, if you save in 15-minute blocks on MEG-2 with the quality you want to finalize the DVD.
You will have no losses if you use the same quality or Profile Analyzer "SVRT" that works 100%.
The simplest, nest projects and produce at one go.
Currently I have trimmed the defective edges of the VHS and for me it does not have much loss of quality, and to visualize on Led TV I think better than seeing the defective edges.
But if I apply any improvement even stabilization I think it gets much worse.
I use to capture, Philips DVDR3380 recorder, files (.VOB), quality HQ, SD 1 or 2 hours.
Thanks Barry and AV
I must check out Virtual Dub and Magic YUV as I know nothing about them.
I think I will stick with rendering the 4 projects as one.
The next problem I am having is with Multitrim misbehaving
Will make a new post if I can't sort that out
Thanks again
The answer by PowerDirector Moderator
from New Taipie on Oct 18 2016 and the followup was very helpful explaining it to a
Dummie such as me. They should have you write the Manual.
My query here is whether I am on the
right track in a project I am commencing to reedit old VHS source
material.
Because I will be using the Enhancement
and Stabilising tools extensively, along with the usual titleing and
transitions, it means my rendering times will most likely be quite
slow.
I am intending to break up the project
to 15 minute blocks, probably 4 blocks for each DVD using the nested
feature to bring it back together for completion.
1. Should I render each block as a MPEG-2 file and bring those files back to finish the project, this would make the rendering more manageable or 2.
should I bring back the edited project files and render the lot in
one go.
The first choice means rendering twice,
and I wonder if this would affect the quality.
In a previous test I found the second
choice meant rendering time of 3-4 hours.
QuoteYou're not going to have too much success upscaling your video no matter what you do, Robert.
VHS video was only about 330x480 pixels resolution. That's less than half of standard TV's 720x480 resolution and about one-eighth the resolution of today's HDTV.
You don't say what kind of device you used to digitize this old video, but that could be a factor too.
So you can place your video on your timeline in PowerDirector and size it to fit the frame -- then right-click on it and select Copy Keyframe Attributes, select the other clips on your timeline, right-click and select Paste Keyframe Attributes. That will apply your resizing to the entire timeline.
But just don't set your hopes too high. You're still dealing with a very low-quality, low-resolution media.
That was a quick reply - Thanks Steven
I digitised that by using the passthrough feature on my next camera which was a DVTape.
In it's day we thought the quality was ok amateur standard on our analogue tv.
Hoping that by reducing the screen size it might be watchable again, certainly painfull on a large screen
Thanks again
The display of these old home movies is crappy on modern hd tv screens.
I am proposing to use the video enhancement and stabiliser tools to tart them up a bit. These were not available when I originally did these projects.
Also I am pretty sure I will need to shrink the size somewhat closer to the old analogue tv screen size.
The pip designer seems to be the tool to do that.
Is there a way to do that for the whole project rather than having to do each clip?
I'm sure I am not the only one wanting to renew these old projects.
Any advice apreciated.
QuoteWas PD 16 uninstalled as part of the new suite? I have a suite that came with my computer, but it only finds the most recent latest versions of any Cyberlink software I installed AFTER.
So, even though the suite was a crippled version, it opens PD16 Ultimate Live, as well as the full Power2Go I have, a few others, all installed over the suite.
Thanks Barry,
I think you may have hit upon what I did wrong.
When I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 I kept my Win 7 as a dual boot setup, and kept the PD on Win 7.
I installed the Media suite to Win 10 partition.
In any event I requested a refund as it wasn,t any good the way it was.
Will think deeper about what I actually need.
Thumbs up to Asknet. The refund was made without any fuss.
Regards,
Bob
If it does not fit your needs, and your are within the 30day purchase window, request a refund and purchase what fits your needs. https://www.cyberlink.com/support/faq-content.do?id=2317 From there you would have to contact CL support as the enclosed link in the post appears to be an error, the 30day policy however is not a error.
Jeff
Thanks Jeff
I suspect that that promotion is somewhat misleading.
A lot of stuff in Media Suite I don't really need, but was expecting the full Monty in PD16.
Will request a refund.
Regards,
Bob
I recently downloaded and paid for upgrading from PD 13 Ultimate to Media Suite 16 Ultimate and registered same.
There seems to be stuff missing.
For example the Titles are very few.
I tried copying my titles from PD 13, but PD 16 is not recognising them.
Some Edit features are not available such as Edge Enhancement, HDR Effect, Split Toning.
I get a screen saying Your version does not support this feature, and an invitation to upgradr to version 16, which is what I am supposed to have.
Any comments appreciated.
