your PD 12DE(LE) is a bundled software with the capture device.
after the capture, import to the edit workspace then to the produce. here you can choose the .mp4 file format and convert the mpeg-2 to .mp4 container.

if you just want to convert to the .mp4 container then the Handbrake will work. if newer versions of handbrake doesn't work for your pc then try older versions. here's an additional K-lite codec if needed.

WinDV v1.2.3 is an another free video capture software.

I am looking for capturing the movie straight to .mp4
i am currently converting the .mpg to .mp4 using handbrake but it is a pain doing double the work.
I guest PowerDirector does not have a version that will capture the MiniDV movies from my camcorder to .mp4.
