Just bought a new Laptop with i7 7700HQ which has the HD630 GPU, but also has GTX1060. There is no way in the BIOS to disable the INtel GPU. Has something to do with the 120HZ display. Is there any way to force PD15 use the GTX1060 to render video?

After some messing around, I don't think PD15 is using the HD630 GPU either. Should there is support for the newer GPU?

I get Intel QuickSync when rendering MP4, but I don't see the Intel logo in the FX or particle sections.

That's almost always the problem with gaming laptops, the worst choice for video editing!

But I couldn't find a quad core CPU with GTX1060 otherwise. I didn't have this issue with my earlier Asus ROG. I may return this one and go back to Asus although I didn't like that display at all. I checked out Razer Blade, Sager, Acer, CyberpowerPC and Alienware. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of nVidia Optimus technology which is center of the issue. I have a support ticket at nVidia is see what they have to say.

Just loaded Passmark Performance Test 9 Evaluation copy

Passmark rating: 5165.0
CPU: 9921.7
2D: 821.7
3D: 9148.0
Memory: 2920.0
Disk: 6458.8 (NVMe PCIe 256GB SSD)

The old PD versions like 13 and below seem to be allow a choice in the nvidia settings in laptops. A quick test would be to install PD13 or earlier to see if this is still the case.

Let us know if this works.

Thanks... I do have PD13. I'll try that.

edit: didn't work so must be the nVidia Control Panel. Hope I get an answer from nVidia tech support.

congrats for getting kabylake comp.

it'll be a good idea to open a support ticket with cyberlink, too.

i don't think pkpowerdirector ever opened a support ticket -> PD with GTX 1050Ti...

http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/51129.page

i remember this where cyberlink did a workaround -> msi... unable to use gtx 960M in PD14...

http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/47105.page#244937

it was very fortunate for GTX960 and PD14 worked side by side...

and don't know if Eugene found right drivers for his GTX960 with wX & PD15...

oh happy happy joy joy

Thanks... I also have GTX1060 on my desktop and I don't have this problem because the Intel GPU is disabled.

Got reply back from nVidia tech. They wanted more info. Sent them a screen shot so maybe they will get this fixed in next driver release.

I contacted Cyberlink tech support and nVidia support. They both just said it was fault of each other. It's obvious that PD15 is not compatible with nVidia Optimus technology where the system has iGPu and dGPU. According to nVidia, the system should automatically switch from iGPU to dGPU when need, but it didn't. If you are looking for a high end laptop for video editing, stay away from systems with nVidia Optimus.

Just found that Sager laptops have a setting in the BIOS to actually disable the iGPU. As soon as I get my refund for the MSI, I'm buying one of those. Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

Sonic seems to be our resident laptop expert, it might be prudent to ask him to chime in, and hopefully he can provide more good advice.

Quote hopefully he can put his dislike of editing video on a laptop on the back burner long enough to provide good advice.
He already responded in another post. These laptops could easily replace a desktop. In fact, that MSI has a Passmark trst score higher than my i7 4770K desktop. Does Cyberlink 'publish' a document that describes how it uses multi-core CPUs (2/4 core, 4/8 threading) alongside nVidia or AMD GPUs.

Having such a document in hand would be a good guide for all of us who are on the edge of investing in new hardware. Help us to get the most bang for our hardware bucks based on how PD15 and potentially 16 take advantage of modern hardware.

So I have the following questions:

what IS then a good Laptop for Video Editing, for PD apparently not one with any let alone multiple GPUs? Assuming that I want to flexibility to select my work spot to do the editing.

I see that the recent versions of Vegas and Elements make use of my NVIDIA GPU, so why can't PowerDirector and ColorDirector do that too?

Thanks

PD does use nVidia and AMD GPUs. Just that on the MSI laptop that I purchased, it didn't because of the Optimus technology. I assume that an application must be written to recognize this particular multi-GPU technology.

When I ran the PassMark Performance test 9 on the MSI laptop, it out performed my i7 4770k desktop. From that stand point, it would be capable of video editing.

My next purchase will be Sager NP8174 but swap out the standard SSD with NVMe SSD. Can disable the Intel iGPU in the BIOS so I cn boot with GTX1060. Specs are similiar to the MSI so should perform as well.
