Wow! That's an amazing feature on the G7 (and the other Pasnasonics). I think I want one!
Focus stacking, as you've suggested, is one of the possible applications of this feature. I doubt that
PhD's Bracket HDR would adequately serve the purpose of blending your selected shots because it's not set up to control the opacity of each layer.
Though I've not tried it, I'd suggest the
Layers module in PhD7 would be the best option for you, where each layer can be separately controlled.
