Encoding trowdown
[Post New]
I decided to test the encoding performance of several NLE. Sure, is not a full test, since I choose not do apply any real editing, just encoding.

Source was this video file. It is my video, so no worries about IP rights ... You can use it too if you want to compare. It's 1:16 min long.

Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 1280x720 29.97fps 10115kbps [V: h264 constrained baseline L3.1, yuv420p, 1280x720, 10115 kb/s]
Audio: AAC 48000Hz stereo 125kbps [A: aac, 48000 Hz, stereo, 125 kb/s]
Encode to 1280x720@60p

Used programs have a 30 day trial. WMM is free.
My system has a E5450 CPU and a Quadro 2000 video card. Windows7 x64, 8GB DDR2. Used GPU-Z to see GPU usage.
Latest nVidia drivers fixed as described here.
Results (time and GPU use):

PD12 - 0:51 min. 50% (hardware selected) with Quadro 2000. 25% with Quadro 6000.
PD13 - 1:39 min. 28% (hardware selected)
VegasPro 13 - 1:25 min. 50% using CUDA
VegasPro 13 - 3:27 min. 5% using OpenCL
PinnacleStudio 17 - 2:16 min. 9%
Corel StudioPro X7 - 2:20 min. 0%
Adobe Media Encoder - 2:03 min. 14% (Mercury Engine CUDA)
Windows Movie Maker - 1:42 min. 7% (just for fun, is not a very capable software).

I am curious what other systems get in PD12 (ATI/AMD or Intel video).

Strange, that PD13, it took more than PD12, here seems to me equal to MPEG2 and AVCHD and MP4 files.
Would have to do the same test, for sure.
Another, but here the encoding is faster with HA off, logically CPU works harder.
Maybe has to do with my old video card AMD-FX 8350 / 8GB DDR3
SSD SUV400S37240G / 2-HD WD 1TB
AMD Radeon R9 270 / AOC M2470SWD
Windows 7-64 / PD16 Ultimate

I am not able to get to the video file. Where do you have it? Is it a link to the file on your computer? Upload it to a file sharing site and post where you uploaded it. .

Sorry, the video file link is fixed now...

I am curious to see what's the encoding time with different CPU's and GPU's. Editing effects are harder to standardize as a test over different software packages.

Sorry, was the info in the first post what the file is or what you encoded it to?

I must be doing something wrong. If I encode that video file to mpg4 (1280 by 720) default, it takes 30 seconds with PowerDirector 12 or 13.

Do you have 32 bit or 64 bit Windows computer?

I concur with the others. 33 sec with HA on amd card. 32 sec with cpu rendering. No advantange here with gpu rendering.

Well... you have a better video card (384 cores versus 192 on mine) and better CPU (I guess yours it was the i7 one)
Thanks, that's what I encode to - 1280x720@60p

I guess you don't have hardware acceleration for encoding with ATI HD 6750. However the 8 core AMD-FX 8350 is doing a great job.
What says GPU-Z?

Do you have AMD videocard? AMD Media Codec Package is installed?

AMD Card=Dual graphics mode-using onboard AMD Radeon R7 graphics and AMD Radeon R7 PCIe 8x graphics card (MSI). (Driver information: AMD Catalyst software version 14.7 beta / Display driver version 14.200.1004.0).
PDR12 build 2930: Encode 1:16 min. clip downloaded from SoNic67's link to 1280x720@60p

Hardware video encoder unchecked: 1:09 min. (CPU ave. usage: 82% / GPU ave: 4% (23% peak)*
Hardware video encoder checked: 0:45 min. (CPU ave. usage: 15% / GPU ave: 8% (25% peak)*

*Note: I'm not sure about the GPU numbers because I don't quite have a handle on how to interpret GPU-Z yet.

Interesting results, thanks!
It seems that PD12 uses at some extent the ATI video, I wonder why the CPU usage is so low in HA case.
Looks like VCE in your APU or in the external R7 250 is used:

Updated the Catalyst 14.9 now and did the test with this video post.
Note: PD12 SVRT created a profile.
PD13 did not, manually created copy PD12, in PD13 not turned SVRT.
Time spent rendering:
PD12:
0.41 sec. with HA.
0.24 sec. or 0.26 with visualization.
PD13:
0.41 sec. with HA.
0.23 sec. or 0.25 with visualization

Comparison of CPU work, see image

Strange, if I activate HA, the rendering time is smaller - and that makes sense. I don't get why in your case is backwards.
Maybe I didn't understand your results? Shorter times with HA?

PS: I don't have the SVRD active (it is greyed out).

Before upgrading Catalyst, can not remember if there was SVRT tested.
Now works only on PD12.
When I say redering CPU is actually by sofware, with the power of the CPU is torma faster I think.
Hardware video card in the past with weaker CPU had little improvement.

CPU it had a spike at 100%, then dropped down to 23%. If you run GPU-Z in the same time, you could see if the GPU was activated at that point.

Also, in my experience with PD13 (trial) I noticed that, in this test, is slower and uses less the GPU. Seems like PD12 is still the best option.

VegasPro 13 is close, when CUDA is activated, but OpenCL (needed for ATI?) on my system is weak.

I installed today a Quadro 6000 in my PC. Re-did the tests.
Results are the same as previous. CPU is maxed out like it was before, but GPU utilization now is at 25% instead of 50%.
SVRT is remaining greyed-out. The only difference is that MPEG4 now it has also HA active, didn't see it active before.

It seems obvious that my system is limited by the older generation CPU (Core2Quad, 3GHz, 12MB cache), it cannot fill fast enough the encoder requests.

Note: I made reference to Catalyst 14.9 in the previous topic and make an alert that had serious problems with it, to uninstall the PC is restarted and no longer have active keyboard and mouse, it was necessary to use disc repair Windowns and do the restore an earlier date.
I went back to Catalyst 14.4.

AMD has released a beta driver Click here: Beta 14.9.1 driver
AMD: Due to a small number of isolated usability issues in last week's AMD Catalyst™ 14.9 driver that were reported by end users, we are providing an updated driver that addresses those usability issues. If you are not facing any problems we recommend you continue to use the latest AMD Catalyst™ 14.9 driver which is available at www.amd.com

So far I am not having any problems with Catalyst 14.9. The issues playsound had are very serious so I may roll back to the previous version anyway and image my drive again. Mike B.

Here's my results:-

i7-2600 3.4GHz
GT 750 Ti
PD12
W7 x64

Using 1280x720/25p (16MHz) both MPEG-4 and AVC gave the same results 11 secs 24-26% CPU with HA and 22 secs 97-99% CPU without HA.
