New user question: Stitching two JPGs into one JPG

I'm a new PhotoDirector user. I have scanned images of the front and back covers of a VHS tape jacket. I want to combine the two JPGs into one JPG with the front and back covers side-by-side.

I'm sure this is a simple task, but I couldn't find any hits when I searched the forum for "stitch" or "combine."

Thanks in advance,

Hello Sailor Guy,

Though it would be possible simply to join two photos using Photo Composer, PhotoDirector doesn't have any dedicated photo stitching module.

Photo stitching is a specialised process for combining images seamlessly.

There are quite a few free ones available - http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-digital-image-stitcher.htm - and some cameras (e.g. Canon) come bundled with stitching software.

If you'd like like to see a photo stitching module included with future versions of PhD, you might like to add it to our suggestion box

PIX, thanks for the prompt response...

Let me rephrase what I'm looking to do (I even renamed the subject of this post). After looking at the various stitching programs I realize "stitching" isn't the actual function I'm looking for. I simply want to take two or more image files and combine them into one image. I want the ability to resize and position the merged photos. For example, take two photos and align them side-by-side left-right or top-bottom or take a few photos and create a mini-collage (i.e. 4 related photos of my children with one large photo at the top and 3 or 4 smaller photos aligned left-to-right under the larger photo).

Any pointers will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Oh, that's quite a different thing. PhotoDirector can do that!

If you look at this little tutorial, you'll see how to do it - http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/24633.page#145715 - if you not interested in the background removal part, just skip forward to about 3:20

PIX,

Thanks again for your response.

I'll check out the tutorial and give it a shot in the next day or so.

Sailor Guy,

I've posted an image guide for Photo Composer which may provide a few extra clues - http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/24696.page#199246

PIX,

Well, I'm getting closer but I'm not quite there yet. I watched the tutorial video and was able to merge the 2 JPGs into one JPG in the PhD editor, resize them, and align them but when I go to Save As export it - I only get one of the images saved. The image I added and aligned on the left side of the original JPG doesn't get saved. I assume I need to increase the dimensions of the resultant JPG to include the combined dimensions.

I've included a document with the two images and the desired result.

Any help for this newbie is appreciated.

BTW, is there a limit on the size an attachment can be for this forum? I tried several times to attach a 1.23MB Microsoft Word DOCX file and the upload failed. I finally printed the document as a 176KB PDF file which successfully uploaded.

Regards,

Sailor Guy

Hello Sailor Guy,

We're both making progress! You've just shown me something I didn't know. Thank you.

You're right - I added two images just the way you did & got the same result. I wasn't aware that PhotoComposer did that.

What you need to do is start with a background image - even if it's just a plain white rectangle - and add your images onto that.

Once again, thank you for helping me out!

Yep, that did the trick. I created a rectangular JPEG with Microsoft Paint and used that as the background. Then I could add the other 2 images, align them left-to-right and then crop the image to eliminate the excess background.

Thanks, PIX!
