Split button in Multi-Cam

I am in the middle of a multi-cam project and find that one video is made of two clips. I tried to use the SPLIT button at center left. Nothing I do makes it respond. And the user manual never mentions it, at least not at the pages starting on 64. Has anyone used that SPLIT? Bill Seifert
