PD crashes frequently, Video is choppy in playback, and how do I unlock timeline?
[Post New]
I am very disappointed with PD8 so far. It crashes frequently, plays choppy video, and finished/produced video projects have jagged artifacts when played back (this might have something to do with Anti-Alias). I have not found any way to unlock video so I can cut and paste different clips on the timeline - they all snap to the left and I can't move them to insert a new clip. How do I resolve these issues? I have the best system money can buy. Windows 7 64 bit, i7 980x @333 6 core processor, 12 GB ram, Radeon 5850 GPU Power Director 8 Ultra. I use one drive for OS/applications, 1 drive for media/storage, and 1 drive for PD project files. Any suggestions for page files locations? I am editing HD video. The files from the camera say MTS file ext. I felt I had a lot more control of my projects when I used Premiere Elements. Here is the Diagnostic File for my PC. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Elwood,

You sent me a PM with this very question on September 8th. I replied with a detailed answer on September 8th. You never responded to my Private message. I sent a follow up message to you to see if this issue was resolved or that you had read my message on September 14, with no reply from you. Did you get the messages? If you aren't the same person, which it appears unlikely, same name, same computer spec, but if you are not the same person my mistake.

Here is my response from your original question from September 8th:

Elwood's original PM, you wrote:
Hi Kevin, I am having the same problem as Bill (choppy video). I know it's not the hardware-i7 980x 12gb ram. Could it be the way I have my drives set?
They are C/program files/OS D/media,Documents and produced projects E/Project file (PDS file). Do I need to copy the media files to the project drive when I start editing the project (PDS) file? Do you know of a good article on Drive setup? Thanks.

Elwood

Hi Elwood,

Probably not...My system is set up similar to yours....I have PD8 installed on my C drive and all my videos reside on an internal F Drive. It might be a little bit faster if the videos were on the drive with PD8, but not much from what I know.

Your CPU is more than ample, mine is an over clocked i7 920 @ 3.85 Ghz...and I have 6 gigs of triple channel Ram....you have twice that in your system. I run TWO ATI HD Radeon 5770 in crossfire and it has been a noticeable improvement over my last card. So the graphic card is very important to process your video in real time on the timeline.

1. What are you running for a Graphic Card? NVidea? ATI? Which card? What is the release date of your graphic card drivers? Nvidea and ATI typically release new drivers about once a month. That might be something to check. Go directly to the manufaturer for the drivers....never allow Windows to tell you that your drivers are the latest. You probably already know this, but I just wanted to make sure. Current drivers can sometimes correct playback....not always....but sometimes. IT is worth eliminating this as a possibility.

2. One important part of the stuttering during playback is what your video source clips are. Are they from a camera? Make? Model? Resolution? Bit Rate? File Type? My camera is a Sony shoots at 1920X1080 @ 17,000Kbps bit rate and produces a m2ts video clip. But they won't begin to stutter until I have about 6 or 7 video tracks layered and playing back all at the same time. But I can max my CPU to 100% depending on the complexity of the project.

3. Does it stutter if you place just 2 or 3 clips on the timeline? Or does it only stutter if you have placed a transition in between the clips and it pauses during playback when it hits the transition?

4. Are you using the latest build of Power Director 8? The latest build # is 3022. You can get your build number by opening PD8...Select the Directors Chair Icon....select HELP...select ABOUT CYBERLINK POWER DIRECTOR....you should see something like 8.00.3022....if your number is lower than 3022, you should update it to the latest. Here is a link to the patches:
http://www.cyberlink.com/downloads/support/powerdirector/patches_en_US.html

Let's start with those questions first and go from there.

Looking forward to your response,

Kevin

Thanks for your response Kevin! Sorry, I hadn't seen your earlier pm response. I had two different Elwood accts. One through the main Cyberlink acct. and one through Directorzone - auto sign in.. Guess they don't combine well. Go figure.....Sorry about the mix up.

Any way PowerDirector just crashed as I was writing this. Not even using the Program. Hmm.

I just updated my GPU driver Radeon 5800 series, and I have the latest build of PD8.

I am shooting with a Panasonic HDC-TM700 1920X1080. The file extension says .MTS Depending on the the recording rate it transfers between 5 and 28 Mbps. I usually use HA setting @ 17Mbps (VBR).

The stuttering is usually when I add transitions.
Hopefully, I can get the bugs worked out so I can get back to work on some more music videos. Thanks again for your responses.

Hi Elwood,

No problem about the mix up!!

Thanks for the information. I might suggest that you post this question on this forum...here is the link..it is a bit more on the technical side:
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/forums/show/55.page

The search function also works on this other forum and you will find that if you do a search on your camera model Panasonic HDC-TM700, this isn't the first time this has been reported. From what I was reading the seem to be problems with th video produced from the Panasonic. Here is one topic I found:
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/13103.page#61885

So post your question on the other forum and there will be more technical people to assist.

I think this will be your best course of action.

One thing you might do right off the bat though:

1. turn OFF the shadow edit file creation in your preferences...go to the Directors Chair Icon...Select EDIT....select PREFERENCES....under the GENERAL tab....UNCHECK the box"enable file processing to speed up....." This might reduce the crashing that you are experiencing.

Regards,

Kevin

Hi Elwood,

your computer is more than powerful enough not to use the shadow files that are created. If you start to edit your project...placing various clips on the timeline....moving things around...while the files are being generated...I think it causes things to stall and crash. It's hard to reproduce and replicate the exact steps to make it happen. But from what you have said...your crashing has been reduced. That's good news!

I don't use them and I find that Power Director rarely if ever crashes on me.

Good Luck and if you have any other questions...well we are here if you need help from any of us!

I also saw you post on the other forum....it is another great resource for answers and it is a good bunch of regulars that monitor the forums.

Regards,

Kevin

I'm still having the problem of the video hanging when it gets to a transition. I make sure that the preview is set to "movie". I am ready to go back to Premiere Elements. There seems to be more control with that App.

Hi Elwood,

If I am not mistaken, your camera output has some known issues when working with PD8. I saw you add to a post on the other forum that the other people using that Panasonic were having trouble too. I don't recall if they were having trouble with it stalling at the transitions....It's too much for me to remember everything I read!

For now if the other program works well with your footage, then that it what I would do. Check back and see if there are any patches released for PD8 or see if PD9 is any better. Sorry that it wasn't working out for you, I know it is a time consuming process to figure out if there is a solution.

I suppose you could always add a second camera to your collection!

Good Luck!

Kevin

Hi Elwood,

I did a search on the other forum..."transition stalls" and I got this VERY lengthy topic that is specifically about a powerful computer used by a member and when editing HD footage the playback stalled when it hit the transitions. There were a number of work a rounds...changing transition duration....running with Shadow files ON...but my head started to ache as I was reading...so here is the link and you can read it at your leisure if you are interested.

Thanks for all the good info Kevin! I will definitely check it out! I do have two other cams. A Sony DCR- 100, and a Panasonic PV- GS320. The Panasonic TM- 700 was supposed to be my big "foray" into High Def, lol. However, I might have to go back to one of the old cams for a while.
