Hi,
I just purchased Power Director 11 a month ago, and I really like it. Why should I move up to PD 12?
The question is, is it worth it?

Thanks,
John

Just watched the videos and did not see a pressing need to go PD12. Unless I'm missing something??

Thanks,

Copy and paste keyframe attributes??

Produce range selection??

Loop playback??

Better sample images?

Audio sync to millisecond level accuracy?

Using dB for volume level?

Lens Flare, Magnifier, Tilt Shift, Time Stamp, Water Reflection effects?

I'm sure there are many more new features but only you know what's worth it!

Cheers

...and how is the speed, now that you've been using v12 for a few days now? How does your speed compare to v11? Is it noticeable, or does one need specific hardware? ---

Before answering the speed question I will give a little background on the projects I used to compare PD11 and PD12. I have been using power director for a few years to convert old VHS tapes to disc. I have never posted here because I have never had any problems. I have just upgraded from PD11 ultra to PD12 ultra.

project 1: I Just finished a 2 hour 15 minute video that was captured using a Canopus advc 110. The captured files were saved in mpeg 4 format on a 120gb ssd which is only used for the videos. They are in a 4:3 aspect ratio. The edits were: change aspect ratio to 16:9, numerous trims and some enhancements (which is amazing how good a twenty two year old VHS tape can look with some tinkering) . I burn them to Blu ray at h.264 1920 1080 60i 24Mbs. I have found Blu ray discs last much longer and the picture on my projector is much better than the best regular dvd. To get 2 hours of video on a DVD you must use smart fit and it looks terrible even on our smaller TV. I did quite a bit of tinkering with settings over the years and the proof is in the final results, especially on a big projection screen.

Project 2: 70 minute HS basketball footage shot in hd. Imported in from a thumb drive. The person I did it for just wanted it on regular DVD.
No edits, just create menu and burn in HQ mpeg 2.

Speed of projects : project 1 the exact same blu ray project from the time I hit the button burn in 2d until disc was finished it took 1 hour and 47 minutes in power director 11.
1 hour and 44 minutes in power director ultra 12.

Project 2 DVD of HS basketball: Power director 11 Ultra 10 minutes 32 seconds
Power director 12 8 minutes 7 seconds. (this surprised me)

I imagine if I had the intel gen 4 processors it would be much faster since I believe that is what the new version is geared for. But I have become attached to my 3930k and a new video card is probably needed. I think the added features which I will be playing around with soon will be more than worth it especially the multi camera. Intel 3930k Over Clocked to 4.3, C: 240gb ssd E:120gb ssd for captured videos. F: 1 Tb for storage, sabertooth x79 gigabyte gtx 970 gaming g1, 16gb ram. windows 7 64 bit PD13 build 2604

The test case was the simple Nature.mpg as evaluated here in the pdf. http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/25826.page#140632 The test case makes it easier to understand load on various GPU's/CPU's and may provide some performance insight.

GTX580, 320.49 driver
QS, 9.17.10.2932 driver
CPU, i7-3770, Intel HD4000 GPU
Win7 64bit pro, 16GB

Below are some relative ratio's on elapsed time.

For a H.264, 1920x1080 16Mbps output
QS, PD11 1.5, PD12 1.0 (if PD12 took 1 unit of time, PD11 took 1.5 units)
CPU, PD11 2.1, PD12 1.0
GTX580, PD11 1.0, PD12 1.0

For a MPEG2, 1920x1080, 25Mbps
QS, PD11 1.0, PD12 1.0
CPU, PD11 1.1, PD12 1.0
GTX580, PD11 1.0, PD12 1.0

On my system it depends very heavily on how one has set, for instance OpenCL technology in the preferences, ticked or unticked can result in significant changes, 2-3X and varies with what hardware is doing the encoding.

From what I have seen, when configured correctly, PD12 is equal to or better than PD11 from a encode elapsed time point of view. Benefit appears to be a strong function of output format.

Accordint to thr product page: http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdirector-ultra/news_en_US.html
The major performance improvements of v12 are H.264 encoder and Intel 4th generation Core i (Haswell) optimization.
Which means if you use other CPU or only output with DVD, you won't get advantage.

v12 did many changes, they are subtle but very appreciated.

It looks like I will need to upgrade my laptop first to take full advantage of PD 12.
Thanks

PD 12 is faster than PD 11 from my own experience but you would need Haswell to take full advantage of PD 12. And a lot of other minor changes there and here. You should still be fine with PD 11 though.

His recent purchase and you can try to make the switch to PD11 PD12 is certainly much better, not just the speed but the new ease of use. AMD-FX 8350 / 8GB DDR3

When PD11 come out it said it was alot faster then PD10. This is why I upgraded to PD11.

I have reinstalled powerdirector 10 onto a new laptop & then installed PD11 upgrade on after. I have been running PD11 since it come out & always thought it was slower then PD10 but have never done a back to back test on them.
Well today i did a test.
The test file was 1920X1080 .MTS from a sony HD camcorder. Video length 1m40s
I converted this file to 5 different file outputs & recorded their conversion times in PD10 & PD11. All file outputs were set to the same in both.
Test 1. converted to mpeg2 720x576 data rate 8000kbps
PD10 0m24s PD11 1m03s
Test 2. converted to mpeg4 720x576 data rate 2000kbps
PD10 0m57s PD11 1m22s
Test 3. converted to mpeg4 1280x720 data rate 6000kbps
PD10 2m07s PD11 2m17s
Test 4. converted to mpeg4 1920x1080 data rate 13000kbps
PD10 4m28s PD11 5m02s
Test 5. converted to AVCHD 720X576 data rate 6000kbps
PD10 1m13s PD11 1m48s
As you can see PD10 wins hands down for speed & looking at the videos back to back i cannot see any difference in quality. I was thinking of upgrading to PD12 but would like to see some back to back test done on PD10 PD11 & PD12. From looking at the forum no one as said PD12 is faster then PD11 or PD10.

I ran a render to validate for myself the benchmark claim of 40% faster encoding of h.264. I used a 1min. 52sec. clip with these characteristics:

Format : MPEG Video
Format version : Version 2
Format profile : Main@High
Format settings, BVOP : Yes
Format settings, Matrix : Default
Format settings, GOP : M=3, N=16
Codec ID : 2
Duration : 1mn 52s
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 22.4 Mbps
Maximum bit rate : 23.1 Mbps
Width : 1 920 pixels
Height : 1 080 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16:9
Frame rate : 29.970 fps
Color space : YUV
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Interlaced

PD11 ran it at 2:24, PD12 at 2:40, so I actually got a decrease in performance of -11%.

I realize I'm not using the same input and don't have the same hardware as the benchmark, but it's hard to explain going from a claimed 40% performance increase to an actual decrease of 11%.

Lesson learned - Although I appreciate the new functionality of PD12, I upgraded mainly because of the speed claim. What's even worst and my fault is that I thought of getting the trial first and test it out but went straight for the upgrade instead. I figured 'mileage varies' but even if I got only a 20% boost it would be worth it. Needless to say I'll pull the trial next time...

Anyone else tested that 40% claim? I7-4770, 3.40Ghz, 16GB RAM, Asus Z87-Plus Z87chipset, Sapphire ATI Radeon HD7850 PCI Express-16 3.0 2GB, Samsung EVO 840 SSD 1TB

1 - I wore PD11 only for short videos, save file in MPEG2 HD 720P
2 - Doing the same to PD11, PD12 to, do not feel any difference in rendering speed for MPEG2.
but the editing process heavier, takes to accept commands, even for a short clip.
4 - Now I've made some large projects with more than one hour each.
I have problems with audio added to video, even opening in WaveEditor and renovated the file after rendering the video there is no audio hiccups.
The solution to save the audio separately as it did in PD10, however the option Waveform Audio, which is very fast and perfect PD10, PD12 in this corrupting the audio added.
Solution save as MPEG4 or WMV Audio, made right with me.
There is hope that more errors will be corrected in the next update, which is already taking. AMD-FX 8350 / 8GB DDR3
