The easy way is to use a Black color board on Track 1, put your video on Track 2 and fade between them.

Or you can put a Black color board in front of your Video and use a fade transition between the Black color board and the Video.

Color boards are found in the Media Library on the "All Content" drop down.

Edit:If you want the ripple. Put a Black Color board then your video. put a Ripple III Transition (cross) between the black color board and the video.

Transition from black to white I do not know, but the image to white or any color is simple, as Carl312 said.
Some transitions allow background image, etc ... Flip Left
I think the Glare, but the next you want to.
Curious transition "Glare" here in PD11, it works differently from previous versions PD.

Hi Mervyn -

Are you referring to the beginning of the video where you've inserted the ripple transition between a black colour board & the opening sequence? If so - there's nothing much that can be done about it. Even if you replaced the black colour board with white, you'll still get black (grey) ripples.

The ripple transition, like many others, will use the colours in the preceding & following clips. That's what determines the colour of the rings. e.g. if you place a ripple transition between a white colour board & a green one, the rings will be green & white.

So - as far as I can tell, there's no way to do what you want. I'm happy to be enlightened.
