Can I burn to Blu-ray at 1920x1080 60p?

Hi

I raised a similar query in PD11 http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/26910.page

You may or may not be aware that you can burn 60P onto a DVD using the AVCHD format .

It's 'hidden' in the 'memory stick option.

I haven't tried this so I am unsure of the results.

Obviously a DVD AVCHD burnt disc can only be played in a BluRay player and the amount of data you can burn will be restricted to probably 4.7/8 GB DVD capacity.

I do not think a BR player would recognize the inherently different file structure.

Perhaps the software parameters for this format could be modified just enough to allow BR 60P?

Over the past years others have modified parameters to allow different bit rates, frame rates etc.

I was told that the file structure was different for a memory stick than for a AVCHD disc.
I will give it a try however.

UPDATE-----------------------------------------------------

Well I did try it. The BR player ignores the disc and none of the 3 software player on the computer opened it. VLC said no decoder available and showed a still. The individual files of course played fine on the computer.

The USB stick played on all three software players.

So the AVCHD format is the same but the software or firmware cannot get to the AVCHD files.

So, unless I screwed up and I do, sometimes too often , this looks like an other dead end.

JMONE brought this up a few months ago and I think he had no luck either. He too mentioned the different file structure.

Might be time for a new Bluray player since AVCHD is fairly new standard. I've played AVCHD DVD on my LG, but was created with other software. I'll have to try something with PD11. Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

Gary, it is not the AVCHD video, that is identical.

But the BluRay standard whether as a player or software, CANNOT locate the memory stick AVCHD file when it is burned to a DVD. As mentioned my 3 BluRay software players will not play that DVD either.

The PATH to the AVCHD file (stream) for the memory stick is DIFFERENT from that of a DVD.

But it might not take much to change it.

If you are expecting AVCHD to play automatically like a DVD or Bluray, it may not work like that.

I just burned 1080p60 AVCHD to 8GB thumb drive with no Menu. The root has a folder /AVCHD with /BDMV inside that. The BDMV structure is identical to Bluray. I inserted the thumb drive into my LG Player. It shows the contents of the drive. I have to manually navigate to the .mts file in the Stream folder and press play. Worked fine.

I'll try AVCHD with menu tomorrow if I can find some time. Personally, I don't use menus.
---

Later edit: Just created a AVCHD (720p60) on 4.7GB DVD with a menu. Surprisingly, the file structure on the disc was identical to Bluray. Inserted into my LG Bluray player. On my LG TV, I saw a Icon with AVCHD for about a second and then the menu automatically played. I was able to navigate the Menu like any Bluray disc and the video played with no issues.

So my LG Bluray player has total support for the AVCHD on DVD. I think you posted earlier that your Samsung had a firmware update that is suppose to support it. Maybe not fully ?? If this is the format you want to use, may need to think about a new Bluray player.

VLC player didn't recognize the disc at all

Media Player Classic recognized the folder and played the video, but not the menu.

Windows 8 Media Player and Windows Media Center do not recognize the disc. This is an issue with the players. Not the disc. Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

Thank you Gary, there is a lot of info there.

The viewers of my 60P BR's are family and friends, so the discs have to be what I call "idiot proof".
In other words, just pop in the disc and watch, no menus or other operator intervention.

Before PD11 I used an other editor whose previous versions I had used for over 10 years. While it provided a 60P file, all had to be re-encoded and in the process produced a lot of artifacts.

TsMuxer was then used as well to generate the proper file hierarchy before burning.

PD11 produces much cleaner video, even after encoding and that is what is used now together with ReMuxPD.
Unfortunately SVRT causes too many hiccups.

So I can burn the 60P to BR and all is well. Using the thumb drive just does not do it in the same easy way as far as the viewer is concerned.

Gary, I still think that stick drive it is the closest yet to burning BR 60P, just a little fiddling with the ini file? By members that know what they are doing?

Hi,
For the more knowledgeable members than I, have you tried producing AVCHD and selecting the PSP as a format? It produces BD structure and I have had good results (altho' not to a 'Stick').

Eugene - although 60p has been around for awhile, I don't think it is universally supported. My LG player gave a warning message when I tried 1080p 60. " This video may not play correctly" although it did play fine. I didn't get the message with 720p 60.

This discussion has also helped me. My sister will be looking for a Bluray player soon for her home theater system. Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

Jim, I had to google about PSP. I do not think it would support 1920x1080 60P at 28Mb.

I tried replacing the Samsung BD-C5500 a few month ago, thinking that there must have been improvements over the last 3 years.

Gary, Surprise surprise, the highly rated Sony and pricy as well (I do not remember the model) was not even slightly better when using BR test patterns, BUT refused to play some DVDs that I had burned years ago.

So it went back and now I am toying with the idea of buying an other BD-5500 as a spare.

Or wait until we get 4K players, I have some excellent 4K demo material, with lots of motion, that looks stunning at bit rates below 50Mb. So we might still have optical storage.

Or it could be better and more versatile not to mention upgradeable to build a small dedicated BB computer for that rather than a player. Would not need to be fast (no Rendering) but with a good GP.

Sorry for my late contribution. The issue with using PD's AVCHD option is that the AVCHD spec uses FAT 8.3 naming convention not the long File Names of BD.

At the file system level, the structure of AVCHD is derived from the Blu-ray Disc specification, but is not identical to it. In particular, it uses legacy "8.3" file naming convention, while Blu-ray Discs utilize long filenames
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD

So you can use PD12 to create a 1080/50 or 60p structure that you could then separately burn to a disc or play off the HDD .... but it will only work with players that support the 8.3 file naming convention (and you can not just rename them as all the internal file reference break). I have spoken with the dev of LAV Filters to see about LIB Blu Ray (the open source filter for playing BD's on PC) and there is no plans at present to support this 8.3 naming convention. Likewise many HW players don't support 8.3 either.

As a result, your choices are for 1080/50 or 60p output to Disc:
1) Create Disc --> AVCHD Option : Create in PD using the AVCHD option to create it to a Thumbdrive then burn the BDMV folder to a disc. You must then have HW or SW that supports the 8.3 AVCHD spec. The upside is you will get menus as designed in PD12
2) Produce --> H.264/AVC Option : Create your output as a file then remux it to a BD Structure (using something like tsMuxeR or the ReMuxPD batch file I made). While you will find this will then play with most SW and HW BD players you don't get the menus etc.

If you have any issues with ReMuxPD then let me know.

Thanks
Nathan

Haven't had any issues with my 2yr old LG player. Even played the 1080p60 file although it displayed a warning message first. It can play any format I've tried so far including MKV with DTS audio. I had a bit of a play today and have tried (with no luck):

1) Trying to change the output of the AVCHD to use long file names. I found an old post with a user claiming this renaming scheme works but it would only play the warning clip for me (no menu). Give it a go I guess - http://www.dynatec.at/techblog/creating-a-ps3-compatible-avchd-dvd

2) Editing the Profile Settings in the registry to see if I could get the same AVCHD ones to working under BD.
The second option holds more promise as clearly the encoder can create the files but the correct profile is not available. While CL is sticking to the letter of the law regarding the specs it is a shame they don't give us more latitude like with creating custom profiles for file output in the Disc creation model. For anyone else comfortable with playing with registry settings have a look at this file - C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDirector12\profile.reg (and the corresponding part of the registry that it loads into). Unfortunatly, from what I can tell each hex value does not correspond to a particular encoder setting. I had tried copying and amending data from the "AVCHDProfileAC3_6ch" area (which produces a 1080/50p encode) to the "BDMVProfileMP4AC3_6ch" area and while I could change the formats being produced I could not get a 50p encode. May have more time tomorrow.....

Thinking more (outloud) on Point 1 above. The renaming is not so much of an issue but PD writes the AVCHD V2 profile info (as it should) to the BDMV file that the player then reads to see if it is compatible, and if not it plays the warning clip (as it does on my PS3) and with a SW player. This could be edited out of the BDMV file but it may not be a user friendly process. .... mmmmm .... more thinking to be done. PD 64 Bit-Win10 64 Bit-32GB RAM-80TB HDD

Had more of a play.

Background: PD12 will let you create a 1080/50 or 60p AVCHD V2.0 structure using the Create Disk --> 2D Disk --> AVCHD --> SD Card Option --> and then select the HD 1920 x 1070/50 or 60p (28 Mbps) option to create it on a USB Stick. You could also then burn the BDMV file to a Disk using 3rd party burning sw (such IMGBURN). From what I can tell, PD12 is correctly creating a fully compliant AVCHD Ver 2.0 structure that will play on any AVCHD Ver 2.0 compatible player..... but unfortunately not many are advertised as such!

First things first. Can your player play a simple 1080/50 or 60p M2TS file. If not then there is no point looking any further as it is a HW limitation and nothing we can do. If it does play the file then does an AVCHD Version 2.0 disk/usb drive play, or do you get one of the following issues:
1) Player will not recognise the disc/usb drive at all (it probably does not like the short file names used by AVCHD). You could try putting the attached batch file (minus the ".TXT" on the end of the filename) into the BDMV directory and running it and see if it will then play.
2) Player will play a warning message saying it is not compatible with AVCHD Ver 2.0. The thing is (as we know) many CAN play 1080/50 or 60p content, and if so one of the "Options" below may work.

Options: Unfortunately, it will be trial and error pending what your player likes / does not like.

No Menu Option: Produce --> H.264/AVC : Create your output as a 1920x1080/50 or 60p file then remux it to a BD Structure (using the ReMuxPD batch file) then burn the BDMV folder to a BD using your favourite burning SW (eg IMGBURN). While you will find this will then play with most SW and HW BD players that can keep up with a 50 or 60p stream, you will not get any PD12 style menus etc. This option is the most reliable and you should try it first. If this does not work then none of the following will on that player either.

EDIT - Found a better way! (Ignore the following quote for now) and see the next post!
Full Menu Option: This is ugly, but if you must have a menu and 1080/50 or 60p content the "easiest" way I've found so far is
1) Create your project in folders for both a AVCHD (1080/50 or 60p) and as a BD (in 1080/50 or 60i)
2) Copy / Rename / Replace the following files from the AVCHD to the BD output
- Video Files: stream/00000.mts --> 00000.m2ts (you will need to do this for each video you authored the disc with, eg NOT all of them in this folder. If you added 3 videos then you would have 00000, 00001, and 00002 to Copy / Rename / Replace across)
- Playlist Files: playlist/00000.mpl --> 00000.mpls (same # as above)
- Clip Info Files: clipinf/00000.cpi --> 00000.clpi (same # as above)

Now this will work in SOME players (like the PS3). On some players you may find that the Menu will play but the videos don't then you will have to in addition, use BDedit (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/BDedit) to change some values.
- Run BDedit, press the Folder Open Button and navigate to the folder you created
- Go to the Clipinf section, select the first playlist from the drop down box (00000) and press the read button
- You should see in the middle drop down box that this clip is marked as a "Main TS for a Movie (AVCHD 1080p50/60). From this drop down list change it to just "Main TS for a Movie". Press the save button and repeat for each of the Clip Info Files you copied over.
OR instead of BDedit (and you are comfortable with a Hex Editor like HxD) just open each CLPI file and change the value in 00000020/0F from "0A" to "01"

- Now you can burn to a disc and see if it plays.

I'd still like to work out how to force PD12 to output 50/60p when using the native BD Disc creation option....but that is it for now.

Thanks
Nathan

1920x1080/50 or 60p BD With Menus is Working!

It's a bit rough so I need some testing and feedback from others to see if it is consistent but on my setup I've got PD12 creating 1920x1080/50p Blu Ray Disks with full menus without any other progs involved. The output plays just fine in any player that can decode 1080/50p material.

*** Disclaimer - While this just involves a registry change, please make sure you are comfortable with this. It is working for me (Win8 ) but all setups are different so if you dog gets lost or the world ends you have my condolences but you will have to deal with any issues arising.

To enable "1920x1080/50 or 60p BD"
1) Make sure PD12 is closed
2) Run "TurnOnBD1080p" and accept the change prompts (it will change the registry settings)
3) Run PD12 and author a Project as usual then use the settings as show in the Pic. Currently you MUST select the HD1280x720/50 or 60p and the 5.1 DD Audio options.
4) Let me know what works or does not work

To disable "1920x1080/50 or 60p BD"
1) Make sure PD12 is closed
2) Run "TurnOffBD1080p" and accept the change prompts (it will change the registry settings back)

Once I get some feedback and with more testing I'll write it up correctly in a new thread.
