The time of Video that fits on a 4.7 GB DVD varies with several factors. Quality and if you use Smart Fit.

The general rule is MPEG-2 HQ plays about one hour on a 4.7 GB DVD. About 2 hours on a Double layer 8.5 GB Disk.

I have one DVD recorder that will fit up to 6 hours of very bad video on a 4.7 GB disk, I never go beyond 2 hour recording, because at 2 hours the video is acceptable.

Well I went with splitting into two DVD 4.7GB each.
Put 44 minutes in each.
If I ever go to this length I'll split it into 2 DVDs. Don't think I'll be doing it too many times, though. EVGA (132-BL-E758-TR) X58 ATX

Hi

Just to throw my 2 cents in

You have a terrific High Definition camera (when using 1920x1080 mode), which, when you burn to a DVD you might be disappointed in the result as the file is compressed to 720x480/576.

Do you have a Blu-ray player/PS3?

If so, consider a Blu-ray burner (the USB ones are cheap) and create a Blu-Ray disc.

As I said - just my 2 cents worth Happing editing

Yes, I have a Blueray Disc player but don't have BD burner; haven't needed it because all my videos have fit into a 4.7GB DVD+R, up to this point.
Have been making great High Definition, on regular DVDs, by Producing in H.264 then, choosing AVCHD disc. I see no difference between Blueray Disc and the above. My BD player even turns on a blue light (when I play AVCHD) which only appears when playing BD movies!

Thanks for your reply.

Hi

So your burning AVCHD files to DVD then playing it back on a BD player, now I understand.

To answer your original question of how many minutes AVCHD you can fit on a DVD 4.7 GB, it depends on the various things like:

File size, 1920x1080, 1440 x ?, etc

MBPS, 8, 16, 24 etc

I record at 24mbps @ 1920x1080 which allows me (if I wanted to) to store approx 30mins on a DVD using the AVCHD format.

Note: Just because a disc has a capacity of 4.7GB, it requires about 10% room to uncompress. Therefore a disc holds approx 4.2GB.

All the best Happing editing

A bit more info for you :

- In the majority of cases recording at less than 24 mbs is more than adequate (I've tested this with a large number of subjects). This enables one to squeeze even more HD onto a DVD than in 24 mbs mode.
- In general, you can record a 35 minute HD video on a single layer DVD (AVCHD) or about 70 minutes on a dual layer. It all depends on content. Win 10, i7
