I cannot find any information in help on how to add a color board. I want to insert some black space between clips.

When you are in "Edit", make sure you are in the Media room (same place you add/view your videos and images). There is a drop down menu in the middle of the box that defaults to "All Media". Just click on that menu and select "Colour Boards". Then drag your colour board into the project, the same way you would a video clip.
